[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
It's something of a rite of passage for new Peace Corps volunteers in Kenya to go next door to Uganda and run the Nile rapids just north of Lake Victoria. So a group of about 20 of us went in April 2006. I couldn't go in the water because of ear problems, so I took pictures of the event instead.

The last rapid - called "The Bad Place" - is at the end of a 30-kilometer run. It's a class 5 rapid, and is just beyond a class 6 (unrunnable rapid - though the professional rafters did it), which the group had to portage around. Here is is one of the rafts about to plunge into the middle of the rapid (my wife Jean is in this boat), while a local fisherman, who has seen it all, goes right on fishing.

Technical: Levels to brighten the midtones, then an 81 warming filter at 20%. I cropped a little to cut off a black area at the top (the fisherman was already on the edge of the frame). Selective Color in the Red and Yellow bands, raising the Black slider in each case. Then I selected the fisherman and lightened his midtones to bring out a bit more detail and color. Finally I switched the mode to Lab Color, selected the Lightness channel (B&W) and used Smart Sharpen at about 110%, 1.0 radius - this increases sharpening without (usually) causing a color halo.

Yiii-haaaa!!! :))
Having done that crazy thing two times (even too much a number like an urban boy like me, LOL), i very well know the shocking delight of that moment of freezing SPLASH!
1/500 sec makes all the details so sharp. You were waiting for your pray at the right place.
Best wishes Dan,
Deniz

Bonjour Daniel
J'aime bien le contraste entre le calme de ce pêcheur et l'agitation de l'eau.Très bon rendu des remous.
Bonne journée et bonnes fêtes.
Cordialement

photo,another good and impressive poto,
taht excites our feelings...
Thnaks for your photo,
Costantino

Daniel, j'aime le contraste entre les deux sports de cette photo.
Ce pêcheur semble attendre que ce gros poisson tout boudiné vienne mordre à son hameçon. Une photo pleine de lumière et de dynamisme plus une pointe d'humour.
