Photographer’s Note

Life in Uganda can be tough for many, this family probably rent this one room place. There is no social security or old age pensions so you either work and earn or you starve.
Uganda is a lovely country and the people very friendly, indeed the people of Africa are a naturally friendly and cheerful lot despite many hardships and problems like malaria and HIV.
Uganda, like some other African countries has a darker history.
In Uganda Adi Amin staged a military coup in 1971 to depose of Milton Obote, he ruled till 1979 and in that time he murdered somewhere between 100,000 and 500,000 of his own people. He was then overthrown by the neighboring countries and fled to Libya and then to Saudi Arabia where he died in 2003.
He got away with his crimes, these days one would hope that the International Criminal Court would have got hold of him and tried him.
In the northern part of Uganda there is an equally nasty organisation called the Lords resistance army who murder, rape and terrorise the people and use child soldiers, I have never got to the bottom of why they exist and the point of what they are doing.
So Africa has its very dark happenings today but the ordinary people who do not want these things still smile, laugh and can dance to the most wonderful music.
