On my recent trip to Uganda, we went gorilla tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in the southwestern part of the country. There are three gorilla families living in the park that have been habituated to tolerate relatively close human observation. Every day, up to six tourists are permitted to view each of the families for 45 minutes.
There were four of us with a ranger and three armed guards. Two trackers had gone ahead to the place where the gorillas had last been seen the day before. We walked for about an hour and half (uphill in the mud) before meeting up with the trackers. We then left the trail and walked for another 15 or 20 minutes through the bush to reach a family of one silverback, three females, and a couple of babies.
This sub-adult, aged nine years and nine months, sat calmly in this tree about 10 or 12 feet from us, eating leaves and watching us watch her.

Great to see a picture of one of these amazing relatives in nature, note are good composition is also very good, what lets it down IMO is the lack of details in his fur this looks to be due to the camera having read the surroundings so under exposing him. 2 solutions for next timetake the reading off him or a darker area in front, alterative not always posible, is to use flash to fill in the shadows with light

An excellent shot of a gorilla in its natural habitat, Mimi. It seems to me that the exposure is just about right in the circumstances. I have tried a workshop, the objective of which is to bring out a bit more the fur and features of the gorilla.

When you look at an animal like this it makes you feel so small and worthless. What a fantastic photo
