Photographer’s Note
We were shooting a scene for a film in the slum of Kisenyi. We were starting to lose the light, and the mostly Ugandan crew started getting edgy... Kisenyi is not a place to be with expensive gear after dark. A large crowd was gathering behind our flagging tape barrier and around our vehicles. We had more scenes that we could have shot after dark, but the director and I agreed it would be best to get out before then. We left without incident.
I had snapped this shot of two children doing the dishes outside their shack of a home earlier that day, and later reflected that their expressions summed up the two moods of Kisenyi: friendly curiosity, and suspicion.
