Photographer’s Note

The Nile flows out of Lake Victoria at Jinja and almost immediately becomes a series of rapids for about 30 km. It's become a bit of a tradition for Peace Corps volunteers in Kenya to take a quick vacation over there, so a group of about 20 of us went around Easter. Because of my ears, I couldn't risk running the rapids (rapid changes in pressure if I fell in could cause problems), but Jean went, and I stood on shore with a long lens.

There's a class 6 rapid just before the end of the run, which everyone portages around (except sometimes the guides like to take the boats through on their own), and this is followed by a class 5 for the grand finale. Here is one of the boats at the end of the class 5 run; that's the guide's head and elbow sticking out, while the 6 passengers can't be seen at all. (No one fell into the water, though the guide did jump in once they were clear; see the workshop). Also see this shot, taken just the one displayed here.
