Photographer's Note

The great mosque in Kairouan, also known as the Sidi Okba Mosque (after the founder of Kairouan who built the first mosque on this site) is considered the fourth holiest site for the Muslims, right after Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem. The present day mosque was built in the 9th century. Over 400 columns from Carthage and other ancient sites were reused in building the mosque.
