This is the fruit and vegetable market of the oasis Douz in southern Tunisia as seen from Hotel Bel Habibs roof.

Because of the extreme temperatures here the rooms were way too warm to sleep in, instead we slept on the roof, which was a pleasant experience. We fell asleep watching the moon and were woken by the three different minarets nearby. This was taken early one morning just after awakening.

Actually the walls in the hotel rooms gathered so much heat from the sun during the day that they were still hot at night, a flow of heat was felt against the skin if you were close to the wall, and there was no A/C. A lot of time was spent at the internet café during the days since that was the only public place with A/C in the old part of Douz (I guess there's plenty in the more touristy parts).

Douz was one of my absolute favorite places in Tunisia. The town has a very friendly atmosphere, everybody seemed to know everybody. We were treated very well at the hotel, maybe because we were the only customers at that time. Habib who ran the hotel said "It's more important to make friends than money", and I don't think it was a cheap sales trick because we had a lot of good times there during our brief stay.

I didn't get a perfect angle for this shot maybe, but I don't think the neighbours would have liked if I walked over to their roofs to get a better picture. This still gives a pretty good picture of what early morning life is like in a tunisian Oasis. Because of the heat there was siesta basically from 10am to 5pm every day.

quite an amazing street scene and thank you for all the information. imo a crop from the top would move the wires out of the upper left corner and make them less dominent in the image. i will try a workshop here to demonstrate and will post it tomorrow. like the shapes of the buildings and the placement of the street in the image. very nice image.
