[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Le colisée d'El Jem date du troisième siècle après JC. Il est haut de 36 mètres et son périmètre est de 427 mètres. Il a servi durant le tournage du film Gladiator.

El Djem is famous for its amphitheatre (often incorrectly called "a coliseum"), capable of seating 35,000 spectators. Only Rome's Colosseum (about 45,000 spectators) and the ruined theatre of Capua are larger. The amphitheatre at El Djem was built by the Romans under proconsul Gordian, who was acclaimed Emperor at Thysdrus, around 238 and was probably mainly used for gladiator shows and chariot races (like in Ben-Hur). It is also possible that construction of the amphitheatre was never finished.

Until the 17th century it remained more or less whole. From then on its stones were used for building the nearby village of El Djem and transported to the Great Mosque in Kairouan, and at a tense moment during struggles with the Ottomans, the Turks used cannons to flush rebels out of the amphitheatre.

The ruins of the amphitheatre were declared a World Heritage Site in 1979. (Wikipedia)

One more example of the extraordinary architects the Romans have had in the past, and even nowadays have. Your picture reminds me how dangerous we, human beings, can be. The image has a nice flowered foreground and a good POV but I think that some pp work would be OK. Nice shot all the same and very good note too.

Ce superbe amphithéâtre est relativement méconnu et pourtant presque aussi beau que le Colisée de Rome. J'y ai passé de longs moments lorsque j'habitais à Sfax ,regrettant à l'époque (35 ans déjà) le peu d'entretien et de mise en valeur du lieu.Peut-être la situation a-t-elle changé depuis?

Bonjour Marc,
Ces ruines sont magnifiques et j'aime bien ta composition avec ces fleurs colorées et un peu de verdure en bas.
Par contre, je trouve que ça manque un peu de peps au niveau des couleurs et des contrastes. Mais bon, ce sont peut-être les couleurs naturelles que tu rends, je ne sais pas.

Excellent pov, despite the bland sky, i find the colors very relaxing. Well done, i like how you compose this shot too..

I remember this amphitheater near Sousse, so well and you have captured this magnificent relic so well, mark. The colour is especially good and it is improved by the inclusion of the flowers in the foreground. regards kevin

Un cadrage qui met ces ruines en valeur. Très joli ces fleurs à l'avant plan.
La courbe donne de la profondeur à la photo.

Re bonjour Marc,
Les couleurs sont un peu palotes mais l'ambiance générale me plait bien dans cette photo. J'aime bien le choix du format carré qui donne un bel équilibre à l'ensemble. Beau travail.
