Thuburbo Maius was originally a Punic town. It was founded as a veterans' colony by Augustus in 27 BC. It is located 60 kms southwest of Carthage on the major Roman (African) highway, some portions of which may still be seen. This photograph is taken in the northwesterly direction and shows the remains of the temple dedicated to Ba'al Hammon. Ba'al worship flourished in the Phoenician colony of Carthage. It may have included the sacrificial burnt offering of children and ritual prostitution as part of the worship.
