Smoking shisha is a common practice and a culture throughout the Middle East and North Africa. It’s one of the most social ways to spend time with friends at any hour of the day. In this tea house men huddled around small tables playing board games, drinking mint tea and exhaling tobacco. This swarthy bulky man gingerly placed the end of the water-pipe in his mouth and rapidly started inhaling. Bubbles formed at the bottom of the water-pipe making a noise similar to an overheating pot spewing water from its top. Several seconds later he exhaled, puffing smoke out of his mouth.
I was enthralled as I sneaked a peek at this smoker who seemed to be in a relaxed and hazy state and unknown to him, I was busy firing several exposures. I like the incomparable spirit of this old tea house, feel of the exotic atmosphere, full of fascinating colour and nothing could compare to the experience in the middle of the charming ancient Tunis Medina. This is great place to come in and wander with a camera.
It’s the moments like this that I don’t forget over time...
WS: Row of "oboists" blowing the right tune !!!

Unusual but very special composition with great atmosphere. The way you describe, it sounds similar to the hookah which is common in some parts of India too. The framing is excellent with the smoker well placed I the foreground. The exposure in the difficult light situation is managed very well.
Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend.

Salam Abmdsudi. You haven't forgotten and now we have a chance to remember thanks to this excellent photo full of ambiance. Brilliant combination of colour and the contrasting darker areas. The man is larger than life. The sisha is nicely positioned. Regards. Klaudio.

The picture has lovely warm colours. The tea house has a nice location in the medina and looking out on the shop with the colourful clothes and red bags.
Excellent light management.

Fine capture of this oriental tradition. I like the mysterious mood given by the old interior and the poor light. Well taken.

You have observed and captured a really interesting scene full of great and special lights! Without this fantastic warm in tonality background the view would not look so well. Very well seen and executed one. TFS!

A scene with the insider view of the stall holder smoking his shisha here. Great contrast between the darker man and the brightly lit wall and the exposed wares there. A scene that can be seen all over the arabic world indeed.
Only thing a lot of people don't realize is that smoking the sisha is in fact even more dangerous than smoking a cigarette.
have a great weekend

I really admire your courage to take candid shots of people doing their daily routine. Was he aware that you were taking his picture? I do like the lighting especially they way it highlight the smoke coming out of his mouth. Wonderful colors. Well done, tfs.

Hello Abmdsudi - I like the POV you chose here; looking out of the tea house towards the clothing display tells us a little about the location of your shot and the bright background details with the arched ceiling adds additional atmosphere to the photograph. A scene that tells the story of a different cultural experience and lifestyle.
Nicely composed I like the 'rawness' of the result.

Yes you are right, Abmdsudi, and if you go through places in Jaffa, Tel-Aviv, you might see same scenes.
Marvelous taken this picture, with the man concetrate to enjoy his Nargila and "left" enough room to show the premises behind. Light superbly managed.

This picture just oozes atmosphere. You dealt very well with the low light. The smoker is anchored in the corner very well and it is good to see him in context of the environment.
An original and fascinating image.
Kind Regards, Ann

The colorful background contrasting with the greyish foreground looks attractive. The DOF and the details captured add to the strength of the photo.

This Medina is very big and so full of life. I guess you captured the atmosphere very well, from a good pov. The light is great and give a lot of atmosphere. I like the colourful clothes and bags waiting for clients and the men smoking shisha make a wonderful foreground. I love the effect of the smoke and the details of the doors. Good shot!

A good daily life scene with a nice candid shot! I like the exposure handling, with the golden tone of the tunnel structure against which the clothes are displayed...The man is in relative darkness, but wonderfully exposed and well timed to catch him exhaling smoke.
