Photographer's Note

Acting as a symbolic barrier between the tree-lined avenues of the French-built new town and the chaotic maze of narrow lanes that make up Tunis Medina, the "Porte de France" can either be an entrance or an exit. Arriving from the Champs-Eleysees style Avenue Bourguiba this structure appears as a gateway from orderly Western Europe into the untamed heart of North Africa.
