It was a sunny January day. No, not only sunny but hot – one of these days you usually get in early spring that surprises you with bright sunlight and heat... and you start sweating and taking your clothes gradually, only to end up in short sleeves even if'd been convinced days like these are yet months in front of you.

We took a taxi in Sousse to get us to Monastir. Even in a vehicle it was so hot that the driver had to leave all windows opened. Not many people on streets – tourists anchored in cafes and locals waking fast trying to stay in shade as much as possible.

It was then when I spotted this young gentleman, walking pavements in a hurry, while sunlight was protruding through lush branches of trees, caressing his face but fully illuminating only the birdcage he was carrying carefully, as if it was the most precious treasure in the world.

Wonder why he was in such a hurry... on such a hot day...

Robert,
Fascintating portrait - even you can't explain it - and maybe that's it's charm - balance, stillness, strengh, care - all sorts of inferences which we cannot explain. I like it that way.
Regards
colin

hi Robert

You frame him perfectly with the birdcage so brightly exposed although his face is in shadow partially, the eye squint shows the strong sunlight to make your exposure tough to handle. But I think the darker backdrop is good for this portrait. tfs

Hi Robert,

you have captured a very nice moment, it really looks like he´s holding a great treasure...and especially good is also the light - on the cage, and shadows around, which also enhance this...

Take care, Ivana

I've been waiting for a new post from you and here it is. We can see clearly from the image that he is holding the cage with great care. I like his expression and the dappled light on his face. His warm clothing tells us he wasn't expecting the heat either. Good candid portrait with a story.

Hello Robi! He certainly looks not very confident, maybe the bird had lost some feathers, or it was a very expensive bird and he wanted to bring him to one of these shows to win a golden medal, or he stole the birdcache and was running away, many possibilities, you choose :) I like how the white somehow sticks out and it only goes with your text about a hot day in Sousse when you hide from the sun. Strong photo with a great story! Enjoy your weekend ... Barbara.

A very nice composition - your handling of light and shade is remarkable, a good subject too :)

Nice candid portrait shot, really a treasure the way he handles the cage. I can see a nice contrast between the man's outfit and the bird cage. Well done.

Hi Robert
He does seem very protective of the cage, maybe it was a really rare bird:)
Very good portrait.
