Last lights on the desert beach of Korba, the effect on the sand is really beautiful,i like it!
Korba, ancient Curubis, is a town in Tunisia on the eastern shore of the Cap Bon. It was the place of exile of the Carthaginian bishop Cyprian in the year leading up to his martyrdom. Modern Korba is in the Nabeul Governorate and had a population of 34,807 in 2004.
Ancient geographers and itineraries mention the town Curubis on the African coast between Clupea (modern Kelibia) and Neapolis (modern Nabeul).
The earliest historical record is an inscription from the time of the Roman civil war, which records that the Pompeian generals P. Attius Varus and C. Considius Longus fortified the town in 46 BC.In the years after the civil war the town was made a Roman colony, colonia Iulia Curubis (Pliny the Elder refers to it as libera, "free"), perhaps as part of Julius Caesar's attempt to rid his army of older soldiers and at the same time hold Africa against Pompeian forces. In the year AD 257, the Carthaginian bishop Cyprian was exiled there; his biographer Pontius, who accompanied him into exile, praises the place: "provisum esse divinitus … apricum et conpetentem locum, hospitium pro voluntate secretum et quidquid apponi eis ante promissum est, qui regnum et iustitiam dei quaerunt." ("by god's favour a sunny and appropriate place was provided, a refuge secluded as he wished, and whatever was previously promised to be set before those who seek the kingdom and justice of god").
By the year 411, Curubis, like many African towns, had its own bishop (mentioned in the proceedings of the Council of Carthage of that year). A bishop of Curubis is mentioned again in the Notitia provinciarum et civitatium Africae in the year 484, among the bishops exiled to Corsica for refusing to swear allegiance to the Vandal king Hilderic, and again in the proceedings of the Council of Carthage of the year 525.
The town had its own theatre. An inscription of the late 2nd century honours the citizen who had created it. Remains of an aqueduct survived to modern times; and the contribution to a mosaic in Ostia by shipowners of Curubis suggest that the town also possessed a port, which has not survived.
A recent account of the life in Korba may be found in Mounira Khemir's narrative "Un coin du carré bleu"

I thought for a second that this was a scene from Iceland! looks very similar to some sort of Ice feild.
what i really like about this one is that you cut out the skyline, nice to see the beach in this format.
and the lighting is dimmed, not overly bright.

Sempre attento e vigile....

the light is really nice here. The tonal quality is superb. Like the textures in sand. A nice minimal composition, perfect cropping... Tfs.
snunney (90030) 2013-07-31 2:59
Your composition concentrates on the subject leaving no room for any distractions; a very good idea. The image has a 3-D look with the runnels of sand interspersed by little pointed peaks. I like very much the play of light across foreground and background. A beautifully observed composition ideally presented. Thanks for sharing.
ikeharel (63071) 2013-07-31 4:03
Superb view of one amazing earth-phenomenon, the dunes, Luciano.
Moving sand created an attractive pattern on the surface, and you greatly managed a fine photo about.
mjw364 (2) 2013-07-31 4:14
Interesting how the wind has created these textures, shapes and patterns and the low level light really emphasises them. Well observed.

You´re right my friend, the last rays of sun before it goes down look here amazing! But of course there is much more I like about your stunning shot.Like for example your idea to give up from "traditional" horizon line-in my opinion it enhances the strong graphics of the scene much better. And finally the gentle play of light&shades adds also pleasant feeling to it.
Creative approach to the photographed theme Luciano!
Wish You all the best

Magnificent note, to place in the rich history of this land.
As you say, these last light on the sand, creating a truly fantastic effect, also give a nice effect, these small elevations, as if they were roots sandy, beautiful job with an elegant frame.
With perfect definition and brightness can enjoy fine details in the image.
A good day of light that gives a nice range of colors.
Very well done. I love the image.
Have a nice day.
All the best.
holmertz (45359) 2013-07-31 11:47
This is an intriguing picture because it's not so immediately easy to imagine the dimensions. I guess this was taken quite close to the ground and that these little pieces of wood, or tufts of weeds, are quite small. The blue/orange colour is fantastic and the dark lines and uneven surface make the the desert look surprisingly dynamic.
williewhistler (15573) 2013-07-31 12:24
waiting until the sun was low in the sky has payed an enormous dividend, the shapes of the mounds and the gritty texture of the sand is beautifully captured from a very well chosen view point.
A very well conceived and nicely presented shot.

Fine low level lighting view of the Korba sand dunes, with detailed wind swept ripples and vegetation miniature hills.
And a bonus with your historical information.

The simple composition holds a wealth of natural beauty and textures Luciano. The light brings out the windblown sand patterns really well and I like the slight diagonal framing of the features. Very attractive and good to see a more intimate style landscape image. Warm regards rosemary

The desert can be deadly place to be visit if one is not preferred but it can also be a beautiful landscape! Awesome capture with good side lighting, the shadows created depth. Very well done, tfs.

a marvelous job with the light, the graphic mood of the compo is fantastic and it is an example how a simple subject can be very well worked like this one. TFS. I hope to find some interesting ideas like this in my next travel, facing deserts and colored dunes..
mcmtanyel (16765) 2013-08-01 19:20
Photos like these remind me why photography is considered an art. I like it, but I can't tell why. Maybe it's the shadows cast by the low sun, maybe it's the patterns of the shadows, maybe it's the tiny mountains of sand bulging out of the desert floor. But whatever it is, it is very pleasant to look at.
PS. The noise you are detecting on Departure is a result of over-sharpening. The camera focused on the f/g and the cruise ship was slightly out of focus. To compensate, I sharpened the photo, bringing out the noise. Since I do not mind noise at all, I think that was a good compromise.

Hi Ciao dear Luciano
Great rouhgh and deserted image full of sand.
Very tasteful color and light touch are so fantastic to see and stimulate my nostalgy so much.

Deserts can be very special around the clock, especially when it comes to light and shadows, which you actually managed perfectly. Well done
cjmm (4479) 2013-08-02 6:48
I always like when the photographer's eye is able to go beyond and find details in very simple subjects, that otherwise would not be noticed by us.
Very well done!
Have a nice weekend!
ourania (36490) 2013-08-02 10:15
Complimenti e grazie!
Tanti saluti e buon fine settimana,

Hello my friend,
You travelled everywhere, I can never catch up with you. This is a fantastic shot, I love the sand pattern, as you see I like this type of images. So pure with not much but just sand, but so beautiful with the long shadows.
abmdsudi (46988) 2013-08-03 9:01
I really admire and credit to you for your in-depth observation in making this shot a success that incites a lot of curiosity at the same time. The shot has turned to the landscape enchanting, great composition, lighting, tones and pattern. Well done!!!

Wonderful capture of detail and shadows were every pixel shows your talent. Simple and yet intricate. Thanks for your narrative which gives much information about this place. Bravo Luciano!
annjackman (20963) 2013-08-05 9:09
I love the detail in the sand where some of the grains sparkle amongst the long shadows. At first glance I thought that it was an ariel view of a desert! I like the fact the scale is not immediately obvious. Beautiful and almost monochromatic - well done.
Kind Regards, Ann

Angshu (56592) 2013-08-07 6:10
You played with light & shadows well, which on the ripples & tufts of grass creates a distinct 3 D effect. What I also like is your diagonal disposition...very beautiful!
serp2000 (42118) 2013-08-07 21:23
Good morning, Luciano,
I like it too. Thanks for this informative historical note. There is the white sand in Tunisian desert, not so orange like a Moroccan sand. Simple very interesting graphic, nice frame. TFS!
josepmarin (57959) 2013-08-09 4:10
Gran trabajo, caro amico.

Romano46 (18472) 2013-08-16 10:41
adores (41100) 2013-08-21 15:39
Really good and well seen!
I like the composition and the textures and patterns of the sand are just great!

I like very much photos of the desert. Great light from the low hanging sun allowed you to create those beautiful shadows which emphasize the subtle pattern on the sand.

Luciano, been there, done that..but I don't have a beautiful picture like your..great light, beautiful baby dunes, fantastic shades on the sand..magnificent frame!!
all the best
NorthernLight (2383) 2013-11-13 6:54
fine structures in the white sand. The play of light and shadow in a landscape modeled by the wind.
A great image that many others had probably not seen. You've seen it and you've captured it beautifully.
All the best
