Gran Mezquita de Kairuán - El patio.

El patio es accesible por seis puertas laterales y forma un rectángulo de unas dimensiones impresionantes. Este espacio inmenso está rodeado de galerías dobles constituidas de hermosos arcos sostenidos por diversas columnas de mármol, de granito y de pórfido, que fueron traidas de otros monumentos antiguos (principalmente de Cartago), así como las de la sala de oración.
Cerca del centro del patio, hay un colector de aguas pluviales y un antiguo reloj de sol que indica los horarios de las oraciones diarias. El colector de aguas pluviales filtra las aguas antes de su evacuación en la gran cisterna situada bajo el pavimento del patio.

Great Mosque of Kairouan - The courtyard.

The courtyard is accessible by six side doors and form a rectangle of impressive dimensions. This huge space is surrounded by beautiful galleries formed by double arches supported by several columns of marble, granite and porphyry, which were brought from other ancient monuments (mainly of Carthage), as well as the prayer hall.
Near the center of the courtyard, there is a storm drain and an old sundial that indicates the schedule of daily prayers. The storm drain filter the water before disposal in the large tank located under the pavement of the courtyard.
