The children in Tado loved posing for the camera, often pleading to have their photo taken. The girl in the back was timid to join the others, but was also highly curious. She had difficulty walking and had to use crutches, reason unknown. The "background" image of a person with a physical disability was common. I encountered many people in Togo who used crutches, make-shift wheelchairs, or sat on the ground with twisted legs. Many childhood diseases are just now being treated there.
The last documented case of polio in Togo was 2003. Given the close proximity to Nigeria, one of the three main poliovirus reservoirs in the world, the ongoing risk of importations remains high. Ministries of Health in Burkina Faso, Ghana and Togo as well as those in Benin, Niger, Chad and Cameroon will conduct synchronized National Immunization Days (NIDs) targeting children aged < 5 yrs. Note I am now adding to all photos with from Togo with children: in 2006, an estimated over 300,000 Togolese children were in slavery. |

Hi Adrienne,
I really like this photo and the note you have written. Unfortunately the quality seems a little poor, too much noise maybe and slightly overexposed. I did a workshop, which I hope you think is ok. This is a very strong testament to the lives of people with disabilities all over the world. The children are all very beautiful.

I must admit I like Sarah's WS version still more.
Why so noisy ? Canon 300 seems to be good in low noise :-)
Hi Adrienne, this is a very poignant photo of the African "haves" and "have not". We take healthcare for granted (most of the time) but these kids are only a sip of the wrong water away from death or disease. Nice shot, sympathetically taken. Best wishes, Paul.
