Photographer’s Note

German cemetery in Aného.

Since 1880 Togo was a colonial territory of the Germany. 1897 moved the German colonial administration from Aného to Lomé, which developed thereafter to a busines and traffic center of Togo. Therefore you could see here some buildings from the German colonial age, like the governor palace and a gothic cathedral in the old part of town. After the First World War Togo was taken over by the "Völkerbund". The larger part was assigned to France and a smaller part to Great Britain. While the British part of Togo belongs today to Ghana, the independent Togolese Republic (independence 1960) corresponds to the French mandated territory.
