The Serengeti National Park is arguably the most famous National Park in the world. The park itself is in Northern Tanzania, east of Lake Victoria and west of the Gregory Rift Valley. It is part of the larger Serengeti Ecosystem, which contains other National Parks and Conservation areas. The Ecosystem covers an area of 30,000 sq km with the Park itself covering an area of 14,763 sq km. The Maasai meaning of the word Serengeti or Siringet is “the place where land goes on forever”

There are two rainy seasons; short rains in November/December, and longer rains between March and May. There is still a little rain in January/February, to which I can testify. It is that rainfall that accounts for the green landscape you see in this image. No doubt the picture is very different in the dry season, when the animals have difficulty finding water as everywhere becomes scorched.

We went well prepared with plenty of Deet for the mosquitoes but we were pleasantly surprised at the lack of them, which is due to the higher elevation of the park on a high plateau between 920m and 1,850m. You can still get a bit of a nip from the tsetse flies, although they are non-disease carrying in this area.

Most of my images are of the wildlife, but I am trying to alternate my posts between closer views of wildlife and more landscape images. Here we have some Cape buffalo spotted one early morning drive. I have a close up in the WS.

This image has had very little sharpening as even the original RAW had that “over-sharpened” look you get with a lot of foliage. I sharpened on a layer and erased most of it apart from the buffalos and the trunk of the biggest tree. I hope it uploads OK.

Bonjour Kath
Joli paysage africain aux teintes douces et à l'aspect tranquille. Celà me rappelle le safari que j'ai fait au Kénya l'été dernier.
Merci pour le partage et bon dimanche.
Nicole

Hello Kath,
A good capture of these water buffalo. I like the soft light and colours and the inclusion of the umbrella type tree, which rises above the others and breaks the line of hills. Very good clarity.

Nice, well composed shot with soft colors. A very interesting note as well.
Wishing you a nice day,
John

Lovely shot Kath. I particularly like the buffalo on the left who seems to be giving you a good stare, and the shapes on the tree on the right. Great overall compo too.
cheers
Leon

Hi Kath,
A very beautiful landscape with many pleasant green tones, thanks to the rainy season. Superb composition, good placement of the buffalos (one of them nicely looking in your direction), as well as the tallest tree on the right hand side. Nice to see some hills in the background too. I also like very much the cloudy sky and what appears to be a rather fierce sunlight on the grass on the foreground. Thanks for sharing this Serengeti landscape!
Regards,
Lars

Hello Kath,

The reality of nature and life.. well shown.
Beautifull soft tones and lights.
All the best, dear friend.

Hi Kath

A superb African wilderness scene, with good inclusion of the Cape buffalo. Good sharpness & realistic colour. Tfs!

Hi Kath,

These trees have a distinctive shape that is synonym with Africa. I like the way they play their role of splitting the image in two different layers, with the buffalos in the foreground and the mountains in the background.

The way buffalos are placed, one at left and two at right, provides a balanced composition.

Good work!

André

Bonjour, mon amie Kath,
Philippe

Hi Kath,

Well composed and interesting picture of the wild life in the famous Serengeti National Park. I did see quit a lot if movies about this area. Also a very instructive note.

Groet Rob

That large tree is very representative of the Serengeti. The buffalo are well placed in the scene and the light is soft and even.
Well done Kath.

Hi Kath,

Very beautiful photograph on this African savanna. The buffalo raised the head at the good moment… I like much the light colors of the image. Really a beautiful moment shared and thank you for the photo bonus where we can benefit from the imposing shapes of the animal. Thank you also for the note always so interesting.

With all my friendships and a good end of WE,

Jean-Charles

Hello Kath -

I think you did a very good job on the sharpening issue with this image. This almost looks like a painting and it might be one that you could use to experiment with the painting filters. The composition is spot on and even thought the lighting is not the best your light management is very well done. Good job!

Thank you for sharing.

John

Hi Kath,
I can see what you mean about sharpening. The colors and ambience in Tanzania appears most unusual. I like this shot of the Cape Buffalo. I hope to have an opportunity to visit this amazing place some day too. Great shot and TFS. Geralde

Hi Kath,
A great shot with beautiful POV and good light.
Well done!
Best wishes.
Ahmet

Hi, Kath -

Well, it still looks a little oversharpened, but you did manage to cut it down, it seems.

And it is nicely representative of the region, both the acacia tree (practically the symbol of east Africa) and the cape buffalo staring at you. I've seen that stare many times; makes me glad I was in a land rover each time.

Best,
Dan

Hello Kath,
You are so wise to vary your perspectives with the wide angle to the telephoto views. Too many photographers, especially the more inexperienced ones, just jump right into "telephoto mode" without looking at the scenery around them when they are surrounded by wildlife. You composed this landscape/wildlife image beautifully and this compliments you WS photo perfectly. These great shots are always the end result of all of the hard work and dedication that you have done before you took this adventure of a lifetime. This goes to show that we need to practice, practice and practice in our own backyards before we go on exotic trips like this. You are such a good photographer that I am sure that even with all of the excitment around you, that your exposures, framing and technique were very intuitive, due to your experience. Outstanding safari photograph!

Hi Kath,
I don't know if you had tried seriously doing wild life photo before this trip, but it looks like you have been doing it for years! It's perfect! You made a very compo with the animals and the landscape, I like specially that picturesque tree on the right, that gives a lot of balance to the image.
You are right about the appearance of over-sharpness, but I doubt that anyone could do much about it, specially using only 200 Kb. Anyway, that is the only thing vaguely less well.
Regards, José.

Kath,
Again great catch from this amazing place.
Here I like how you framed the buffaloes into their green environment, nice job,
Regards,
JB.

Hi Kath,
superbe reportage from the Serengeti Park. Very nice view with buffalos and african nature. Good composition and pleasant delicacy colours. I like it.
Gr., Aleksander

I know that the buffalos are a little bit dangerous. No fear? A lovely scenery and great perspective. Perfect clarity of image. Well done
Best wishes,
Achim

Hi Kath,
You know about posting pets on TE, don't you ? ;-)))
nice exotic image, from both the "pets" and the shape of this nice tree on the right. I understant your point about compression, this is a challenging image indeed, but on my screen it looks fine.
Have a nice day JY

salut kath
je retrouve là ce beau paysage du sérenguéti avec ces accacias aux formes particuliéres, cadrage excellent, mais j'ai l'impression que ca manque d'un peu de netteté

hello Kath,
nice reportage shot from the Serengeti National Park with the wild animals. The colours looks pale as the light too.I know it's difficult to capture wild animals at any rate in the National Parks.I'd like a little bit colour in the scene.Very informative your note too.

have a nice week,Danos

Hi Kath.

Elephants, buffalos, Rajoys, gamusinos and Simba.
Please, don't ask me to translate this last.

I must confess that I prefer the previous one and those WS, but also this one is a very good photo and fits perfectly TE terms.
Nice and not easy photo.

Thanks for sharing.

Kath,
I miss the sharpness that you had in your next post. However, the composition with the buffalos and the so typical trees in the background makes a nice image. Not quite sure at what part of the day you got this shot, but it seems to be a harsh light that makes the whole scene a little bit fuzzy.

Hello Kath
The light does look a bit harsh, but that's expected. The compo. is well done...did you take it from a vehicle? The tree on the right is quite majestic in both its shape & size. Very tricky to do PP here, especially with Shadow-Highlights given the cloudy sky, but well done!

Angshu

Hello Kath,
I can'it imagine a better safari picture, and although I visited Kenya some 20 years ago I never got such a wonderful safari image. The position of the umbrella shaped tree and the buffalos are what a photographer always dream of. Keep well - Izzet

Hola Kath.
I love to see the wild animals in their own habitat, this is a good example and you captured it very well, good POV, colors and frame. Your WS is also very good.
Well done.
Cheers.

I think the light you got there was not that bad and even interesting, producing contrast and colors, as we can guess it here. And the experience must be amazing (I know I already said that, but can't avoid repeat it !!).
