Lake Manyara National Park is a small park in northern Tanzania. It is said to be a microcosm of most habitats of African wildlife. It is a small park, only 330sq km with, as the name suggests, a lake, which attracts a variety of bird species. It is said to be one of the few places where lions climb trees. The entrance gate is about 1½ hours from Arusha. We left Arusha in the morning, for a lodge overlooking the lake, and set off in the jeeps after lunch.
We passed troops of baboons, impala, giraffes and monkeys on the way to the lake, and on the way back, in fading light, we came across this bull elephant, right next to the road. You can see by the focal length how close he was. He then made his way across the track, right in front of our jeep and went to enter the bushes on the other side. We had spotted another elephant in the bushes and suddenly all hell broke loose. My photos of the fight were rubbish so I have put one of Rob’s in the WS. Fortunately the strongest elephant was heading away from us, as we were so close, if they’d decided to go the other way, I don’t think the jeep would have stood a chance. It was certainly a scary and memorable experience. Even the driver said he hadn’t seen anything like it before.

Hi Kath,
It must be a great and very impressive experience to suddenly meet an elephant just next to the road. Especially when they start a fight right in front of you too. Two excellent photos, this one much more peaceful than the WS-picture. You placed this elephant very well in his natural surroundings. Thanks for sharing!
Regards,
Lars

Hi Kath.

That's a great picture of wildlife. I like the way you composed it and the behaviour of the elephant, much calmer than the ones of the workshop...
The scene you describe in your note sound very impressive. Surely an unforgettable experience!
Thanks for sharing.

Hello Kath,
A good capture of this elephant in his natural habitat. He is well placed in the frame and his leathery hid is nicely caught with good tones and clarity.

Seems you were right in the middle of action, Kath. Memorable indeed. Composition is very good of course, and I like the low-contrast rendition that has kept so much detail. Regards,
Hakan

Hi Kath,
At least this picture tells that it's impossible to guess what's on elephant's mind from a picture. For sure he knew that there was another one nearby, and it will not be a frienly meeting.
This one is well framed and from good close range. But on a bit messy background. The WS is of course something more unforgettable. Maybe Rob just had a little better luck than you did.

Hi Kath,
Quite a story. You can see the anger in his eyes. The definition is perfect and the composition great.

Quite a story!...And he looks so calm on the photo. Must have been a scary experience. Great photos and a well narrated decription of the action.

Hello Kath -

What is there to say about this image except spot on the money. Rob caught a dandy one of the fight in the middle of the road. Jo and I are looking forward to our trip. Well done!

Thank you for sharing.

Amazing and scary how close you have been.
Good composition with this perspective at him and I like how he is framed by these light green tones of the rich vegetation.

Hi Kath,

A voyage which will leave you marvellous memories. You propose here a superb series of photographs to us. Beautiful sight close to this pachyderm in its environment. I like much also the WS and this fight between these imposing animals. The panorama is fabulous. Thank you very much for this sharing Kath.

With all my friendships and a very good evening,

Jean-Charles

Hi Kath,
Awesome shot of this big bull with excellent sharpness and composition. I hear about how many photographers like to use huge telephotos but this photo of yours is proof that a wide-angle to short telephoto lenses are indispensible tools even for wildlife safaris. Unless I was a professional wildlife photographer, I would not want to carry around a huge 500 or 600 F/4 lens overseas. Most photographers would do just fine with the much smaller and less expensive 70-300 zooms. In my opinion, massive telephotos are more useful for small birds anyway. Your WS photo gives me an adrenaline rush just looking at it. You went to Africa for excitement and you sure found it! Superb wildlife image!

Hi Kath.

Well, the only reason why I don't choose this one between my favourites: I cannot add more favourites.

Absolutly all the photos are amazing.

I can imagine this photos in some magazine... but I have a question.
If I am not wrong we began almost at the same time in TE and in March I will be three in TE. I think I've learnt a lot and still I can learn and improve a lot. Then, tell me, without TE do you think you could make these photographies?

Regards.

I like very much how this big fat animal almost mixes with the bushes. the background is really interesting here. It gives me the feeling of these images where you have to look in a very special way to see the subject emerge out of the picture. Here an enormous pachyderm! Well done!

Nice shot of this guy with great details. I like the soft colours and very good focus. Excellent shot and very good composition

Hi Kath,
This is a trip that exceeded your wildest dreams. Excellent detail, framing and color; I like the way the BG clearly places this fellow in the wild and not in some landscaped zoo enclosure. I'm with Kari here, this fellow seems quite placid, you can never tell!!

Thanks for including Rob's photo, so glad the elephants charged away from you!! It's amazing that you have such a wealth of pictures that a stunner like the Lake Vista gets relegated to the WS.

Hi Kath,
I thought that only those pros with plenty of time of means were able to catch such great photos of these big wild animals. I am amazed how you were able to pay attention not only to the technical details, but also to the compo. 1/30 and so sharp! I am impressed.
Thank you and Rob for the WS of the fight that illustrates so well that unique experience.
I like also the other WS. It's a great panoramic view, the sky makes it very dramatic.
Regards, José.

Hi, Kath -

Well, the framing's a bit off center, but under the circumstances....

Elephants are very smart, often unpredictable, and do not like us very much. They do not, however, go after jeeps, which is fortunate, as they outweigh them 7-to-1.

Dan

Hola Kath.
Wonderful photo of this elephant that seems to be friendly at that time compared with the impressive and scary shot posted in one of your WS, things can happen and can change in a minute, checking Rob's lens (70mm) looks like the fight was very near you. Your photo in WS of the lake with the impressive clouds is also very good, nice work with two stitches. I love to see animals free in their own habitat. Well done.
Wish you a nice Sunday.
Cheers.

Hello Kath
Remember this picture from your website. But I am really struck with that wonderful WS picture of Rob of the two fighting bulls. Even your pano is wonderful. That you've posted it as a WS, shows how many quality pictures you have from this trip. A very good wildlife shot. This bull seems to be quite old considering his skin texture. But then of course I am no animal expert!

Hi Kath
Very interesting safari with wild animals in freedom, the fight action is also good in spite of the difficult lights; in this case you must use your camera with the multishot option.
Cheers.

Hi Kath a wonderful capture of this magnificent beast, the rough leathery skin has been drawn out superbly by your sharp focus &, he is nicely camouflaged into the background. This is on my 50 things to do before I die list, to see an elephant in the wild, TFS, kind regards Wilson.

Hi kath great elephant potrait nice expression good colours lights and contrast
very good pov also
Have a lot of elephants pictures on my pc maybe I willl upload some soon. But not yet^^

hi kath
very adventurous indeed. i wonder why do living organisms just keep on fighting? humans, birds, animals all are same! the framing once again is beautiful. all the green leaves/branches makes the space full of life. the elephant seems to be quite old...
