The Kariakoo Market is the largest food market in Dar Es Salaam, and has that feel of organized chaos typical of all such markets in east Africa. This is a detail of a photo in which I tried to capture some of that feeling.
(The name "Kariakoo" is said to come from "Carrier Corps," a British army unit in WWI, made up of Kenyans, which provided transport and other support services. The Kenyans, who were conscripted into the service, hated it, and the name was not a compliment. At the time, Tanzania (then Tangyanika) was a German colony, but the British invaded it from the Kenyan territory and acquired it as part of the post-World War settlement.)
Tehcnical: Cropping to about 1/4 of the original scene to focus on these people here. Noiseware for noise reduction (especially on the face of the woman in front) and sharpening. That didn't do the job,. so I selected for the woman's face and did a slight Gaussian blur. I used Levels overall to fix the lighting, and then selected for the blue jacket and lowered its brightness and contrast. |

A bit too dark to see very well the market and the people walking on it. Maybe too much people to focus very well some of them, as the woman in foreground.

Very interesting street scene, Dan. I like the moment captured and the emotional feel to the scene. Not a lot of happy folks here at the moment. It's a bit grainy, which is okay with a scene like this since it adds a journalistic feel. It might be a bit strong, though.

Too dark ?
I don't think...
I like especially this mixture of light and shadow here...
But is a very difficult scene to frame, with this crowd, superposing people looking and going is some different directions.
I think is a rather good work about a difficult subject...But I miss something of central, a main scene, a main action beetween people...
