Zanzibar harbor : a mythical call on the shores of the Indian Ocean.

First, it begins with a look at the seashore, then you take a small boat, then a bigger boat until you get to the island further away.. and suddenly there's only the open sea that can drench your thirst for traveling.

---------------------------------

"Traveling is not about getting somewhere, it's about leaving. It's the unexpected of the next call, it's the ever unfulfilled desire to know something else, it's tomorrow, eternally tomorrow"

Salut Luko,

This is quite a departure from your normal style...much quieter, devoid of your usual flair for composition with surprising visual elements, this one is simple, this one succeeds by dint of its painterly tones, muted color and a ponderous mood. If I remember right, this is a rare use of tele among your posts.

I really like your composition and your appropriate underexposure tends to exaggerate the moment nicely. Fantastic detail of the outline of the mans face. Very well done.

I second everything Animesh had to say, infact had the image been completely blurry, out of focus, a bird in the sky and perhaps someone in distress, this could have been taken by me ;-)

It really speaks to me, there is a lovely connection between all the elements in this photo, the man, boat, ship and the island, I can imagine this being the last day of vacation and you can see the ship arriving to take you back to the everyday grind. Muted colours, vignetting, how the image flows, however most of all the ever so slightly details visible on his face, all that adds up to a very meaningfull and nostalgic image.

Hello, Luko -

A very moody shot. I didn't like the soft focus at first, but then it started to grow on me. The way the man's face comes through while staying in shadow is a very nice touch. That figure is what makes this photo work for me. I still have trouble seeing the foreground boat as anything more than a toy; the rope changes my perspective.

Well I tell you, Ihave nothing against "Haiku" titles, even bilingual ones ;o) This striking shot unites three of your favorite things - boats, the vertical format (somewhat abndoned of late)... and the famous number "3" pattern. I know there is a mad rush towards Nikon's ghost offerings but once again I am amazed by the "uncovering" capabilities of the 24-105L in combination with the 5D. This is serious work of the highest order - focus bang on the lone man, with the second boat in an intermediate bokeh zone and the larger one even further in dreamland.
A resonant, poetic shot with great lyricism. As good as anything you've shared with us thus far...

How the heck I see in it an early American paintings in there...???
Or.. An illustrations to Huckleberry Finn over Mississipi River...
Or... Uncle Tom's Cabin...
Or...
Basic reading skills messed up my God's given, simplistic interior design quite extensively...
Gotta go back to drive a pickup delivery truck and leave this crap behind me...

I can see Mark Twain' sarcastic smile...
I told 'ya !!!

Merci, Alain -

Hi Luko,

Wonderful composition. Beautiful painting tone in it. The eyes of the viewer takes a distant path along the hypothetical curve created by joining the man, boat and the ship in distance. Wonderful shallow depth. perfect focus on the standing man. Beautiful work.

regards

Sayan

:) hey,
i find the french 'partir' more sad then the english 'leaving' ... no idea why - maybe it's because i just arrived, and am not leaving now :) - anyhow, it's how i feel

good quote to 'picture' and excellent view of the harbor - were you coming or going? ... all elements seem disconnected and lonely (though perfectly placed rule-wise), muted colors beautifully captured and enough water to loose our sight in it - well done!

partir - is this my sadness or your sadness? ... anyways i hope you didn't loose your fascination for africa

stay well,
dora

Bonjour Luko

Bonjour Luko,

Heh nice note and well spotted. The idea works quite well here with the man obviously thinking about something...not completely sold on the darker appearance to the image though.

Hello, Luko--
i like the composition a lot, using the island to emphasize the idea of travel, led into well by the other boats. The soft, dark colors work well for me, too, establishing a mood that really defines the picture. Something about the man being in focus feels funny to me though... i almost wonder what the picture would feel like with the island or distant boat in focus and the man in bokeh. But i'm not convinced that that would feel right either.
Thanks!
sam

Hi Luko, very good moment with the boats in opposite directions and the man is perfectly placed..
i like a lot also the green tones
the detail and the soft light on the man is great..
A bit dIfferent from your style this Zanzibar series..
A nostalgic image..
ciao!

Just looking at your photo without reading your note; I like the juxaposition of the clear expression of the man knowing somehow, that he has not missed one boat, but missed maybe the more important boat--- Love? Money?--Intrigueing (sp?) and powerful photo
thanks
michael
