[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This photo was taken on top of Mt. Kilimanjaro at 5:30 am at 19,340ft or 5894 meters. We made to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro by taking the Machame Route which took us 6 days. The summit day started at 11:45pm for me and ended at 5:00pm the following day. The night we summited we hiked the route during a full moon, so we were able to climb without headlamps. While climbing up Kilimanjaro I felt the effects of Acute Mountian Sickness including a terrible headache, dizzness and I actually thought I heard and saw helicopters while climbing. Obviously, I didn't and it was just hallucinations. It got to a point where I was taking three steps and stopping so my heart rate could catch up with my breathing. We made to the top by sunrise at 5:30am and were greeted by 3 Japanese guys throwing up due to AMS. The volcano in the foreground is Mawenzi. This is by far the most amazing personal accomplisment I've ever done and would HIGHLY recommend anyone who is considering doing it to do it. Watching the sun rise over Africa at the highest point......

I've seen this view and this is a beautiful shot of it, especially the rosy glow off the snow. But I believe you took a huge risk by continuing your climb after a severe attack of AMS. The view is great but not worth your life! Regards, Ken.

Hi Chris,
great shot and especially great trip.
I guess it's fantastic reach the top and enjoy the view......really an amazing place.
