Bao (which simply means "board" in Swahili) can be seen being played all over east Africa. It seems so simple at first glance, just shuffling beans around 4 rows of holes on a board. But try playing against any local in Zanzibar; you will never, never win.

I spent 4 months in Malawi and had trouble playing.

Completely agree! Played many times in Malawi, got nailed every time. By the end of 2 months there I'd even managed to lose every game to the other bloody Pom that I went out there with! Dire.
