To get a picture of a medicinman is not that easy as you may perhaps believe, especially in these days. He might be worried of you as you may steal his soul, he may loose his medicine or any other dissater may happen to him and to his tribe This one was however more advanced and was oriented rather to strenghtening the local economy then to to maintaining the old believes. He demanded 1 USD per picture. OK, I agreed pulling one dollar bill out of my pocket. He however was not ready to cooperate, he kept pointing out to his fourwomen accompanying him and requested 1 USD per each of them. Under this condition I rejected to take a picture of him. Finally we agreed on 2 USD for all 5 of them and several pictures, not just one. To be honest, these were so far my most expensive pictures I ever made. Here you have the best one of them.

Hi Michael, this might have been the most expensive shot you took, but what a shot! The man, in sharp focus, is really of another world, and the Tanzanian sunset is superb behind him. One wouldn't guess that he is such a businessman. Hope he didn't call his lawyer though ;-)
Great photo!

wow, amazing shot!! fantastic colors. the sky is really wonderful. sorry to read about the payment part. I don't think photos should be paid for, it makes them less natural, in my opinion.

its well worth it to pay 5 usd for this photograph is phenominal good job

Beautiful colours and nice back ground.

Hi Michael,

Hi Michael,
Though I have mixed feelings about paying to take a photo, I think this one was really worth your two bucks!
The medicineman's expression, his cloths, the sunset in the back and your compo... it's just great. I really like it.
Regards, Brigitte

Bonsoir Michael,
Un très beau portrait..
J'aime les couleurs et l'arrière plan flouté.
Très bon usage du flash fill-in..
Alex

Although I must admit that I have difficulties with the financial part of this photograph; it's still priceless. This is one hell of an image! WOW! Fantastic job!
PS I hope he and his tribe will be safe from any dissaster!

Michael,
My first reaction was "That's beautiful!". There are some photographs here that take my breath away and this is one. Your note is interesting- quite interesting and brave of you to bargain! The sky is fantastic as are all the colors here. Overall, a great photo!

This is an incredible documentary picture you managed to get here Michael. Very sharp nice details and expression. The beautiful background is a bonus. Actually I think two bucks was not much for such a great shot.

Hi Michael, I like the expression on the man's/ kids face. I like the composition and color. Good job! Very impressive picture!Regards Artur

Awesome !! Everything it's perfect. The expression of the medicinman, the sky/clouds behind. Fantastic shot :)

António

Well spend dollars. You won't get away with these people for free. 2$ is a lot of money for them. A great photo. I like the background. A moodiness that enhances the subject. Very colourful old character.

I am sure to not ask to this guy to cure me even if he is the last solution. However, he is beautiful, and well integrated in the picture with the huge coloured clouds behind. No worries about the 2 USD, it merits!
Bye, Laurent.

for picture like this 5$ is not too much. Picture is txcelent. Try to sell it some photo reviue or Nationa geografic. It can be profitabili.

Sweet picture. I really like the colors there, but I would not use the flash.
Filip

francine

Stunning backdrop and nice mixture of colors. wish your subject was a bit more focused.

Excellent shot Michael, could be seen in National Geographic Very worth the few bucks you payed. A great sky in the back. For me this picture would not be so striking if there were no sky ! Good shot - Izzet

Hi michael,
Great work for that portrait well exposed with the flash fill in,and the interesting background all in worn colors, well done, have a nice week end,
vincent

Fantastic shot, great portrait! I like the expression of this man and the faboulous background. Excellent work.

Hi Michael,
This is a great portrait of this man.
The lighting is beautiful and the colors are very nice.
The fill-in flash is perfectly used, with no overexposure area.
Seeing the amount of jewels he allready has, I think that it is not the first time that he wants money for what he does !
Congratulations !
Amicalement,
Michaël

Hi Michael
FANTASTIC. In my favorites. Nothing to add
Cheers
JP

Beautifully composed and the BG works so well with it.
Fantastic!

Very nice image with good subject and background to give it context. The subject is well placed on the left to give some space for him to look into.

The downsides...there is a little colour cast in the shadows towards red (adding a colour balance layer in photoshop and adjusting red-cyan in the shadows 30 points to cyan helps to fix it). This is not unusual sort of problem given the ambient light and the use of fill flash.

I have also done a workshop to try and give more weight to the background in an attempt to reduce the feeling that the medicine man is just possing in front of a backdrop.

ciao ciao

Michael
The composition is wonderful and the colours excellent. This is moving into the realms of a masterpiece.

Well done

Good capture and even better story to go with it. Most interesting.

Well worth the money paid Michael, great story behind this photo. The contrast is brilliant, and the atmosphere of the clouds and sky add well to the subject of the man your photographing, well done and thanks for sharing, johnnyh.

i love the expression on the guy's face and his traditional wear is very interesting down to the necessities.

Great Job.

Hello Michael! Great note, this shot was clearly worth what you paid and perhaps a bargain. It's a masterpiece artistically and technically. The man is well positioned, his expression well seen, and the expert use of flash allowed you to capture all those wonderful colors perfectly exposed.

Few pictures that I have seen on TE that have received over 100 points seemed worth that many. However, this one is an exception. It is a wonderful portrait of an African woman, captured at the right moment and in a fine pose. With that wonderful sky you have created a symphony of somber and rich colour that is perfectly in character with the portrait. Placing her to one side and leaving the diffused sunset to fill the other side is the perfect arrangement. regards Kevin

What a superb portrait ! And in such a setting...
The light is really wonderful, I'm admiring a lot the technique but it's also the subject that is so great, and his cheerful expression...

Amusing note too, congratulations !
(found this in your randoms, lucky me !!!)
Best,
Cath.
