We were staying in the north of the Serengeti National Park in the Lobo area. We had arrived at lunchtime, had some R&R around the pool at the lodge and set off for a late afternoon game drive. We returned at the usual time around 6pm, but the radio chatter was telling of a leopard sighting so we set off again at speed. We were unlucky and didn’t see the leopard, but as we were returning at dusk, we saw three giraffe on the road close to the lodge gates.

I was making a nuisance of myself asking the driver if he could manoeuvre so we could get the colour in the sky. I was so busy with that, I forgot to change the settings for the gathering gloom, but still managed to get a fairly sharp shot.

It was so dark I had quite a task in PP. This is the result of blending two different RAW conversions. I also reduced saturation of the greens a bit as the positive exposure compensation had made the colour a bit strong. The little “bump” on the top of the giraffe’s back is a bird.

A shot of the two other giraffes is in the WS

ISO100, FL62mm (my turn for the shorter lens, but the VR came in handy)

very nice wild shot again Kath,
fantastic pov, good quality and very nice composition, not easy but you did do it very well here, good photojob, have a nice day.

Hello Kath,
Beautiful photographe...another fine adding to your last series...What I like most, except the colors and lighting,is that the giraffe looks like possing to your camera.I enjoy it very much...

Thomas

Kath -
Youve done the PP well and the giraffe is nice and close and filling the frame. Perhaps the grass could be a touch darker at the bottom of the frame to match the sky and background?
Anyway, good shot, too bad about the leopard.
Dave

Hello Kath,
A great capture of this magnificent creature. Colours and clarity are excellent; very good pp work.

Hi Kath
Lovely colours, light and definition here. I really love giraffes and this is such a fine specimen :-)The sky and the pale foliage help make the giraffe stand out. A really nice portrait.
Regards, Susanna

Goodmorning Kath,
I see the pp work, but it still looks natural. I know it's not that easy but you did very well on both of them. The contrast line over their back is clearly visible but as said, not disturbing. Although the ws version is also pretty good, i prefer this one. Her he is standing tall and proud, full diginty...very nice composed.
Have a nice day, Henk

Bonjour Kath
Belle prise de "cette sentinelle de la savane" qui a l'air de monter la garde. La prise rapprochée nous permet d'observer la petite tête sur le grand cou.
Merci pour le partage et bonne journée.
Nicole

Kath,
Superb animal catch !
So many details to see, and a great sky... Wonderful job !
Regards,
JB.

Very well done, Kath, also with the PP, only the desaturated grass looks a bit unnatural, the rest is fantastic, this "portrait" has lots of character and energy.

Cheers
A.

I'll say that the giraffe is a "suitable2 animal for photographs,.. It seems the leg's length is about 1/3 the total height..
Seriously I think you made a good job here... in fact you got a very sharp image with the raw blending images

Hello Kath,

J'aime beaucoup la qualité de l'image. Cela donne l'impression que la girafe sort du cadre. les couleurs sont très belles et très naturelles. J'aime également les teintes du ciel en arrière plan.
Bien vu.

Hi Kath,
Majestic animal. Low light gives very nice colour to the sky. It's special, knowing how quickly sun sets near the equator. I know there's no use trying to interpet impressions of a giraffe, but he looks a bit sad, doesn't he?
I think you went slightly too far on levelling contrasts. Darker version would look more natural.

hi Kath,
Gorgeous colours and great capture especially knowing those colours are very short lived at these latitudes and darkness falls on you very fast.
Cheers

Hi Kath
An obvious vertical here. You did a superb job with your PP. Good thing you were shooting in RAW.
My first inclination was to comment on the nice light so what more can I say.

Hi Kath,
What a superb photo of this majestic giraffe. I love the light management here with the soft light of dusk as well as the soft early evening colours in the background, against which the giraffe stands out wonderfully. Thanks a lot for sharing!

Hi kath,

Hi Kath,
beautiful portrait of giraffe, excellent composition, light and colours. WS good also. I like it a lot.

Hi, Kath -

Well, the PP isn't perfect, but it is a good rescue job. Certainly the composition is very good, showing the size of the giraffe while also letting us see the scenery.

We once spent an hour or two hunting down a leopard in Tsavo; we were getting discouraged when his head - and only his head - popped up out of the grass. I got a back of the head shot, but it wasn't all that good. But giraffe are fun.

Best,
Dan

What an amazing shot, I have never seen a giraffe in the wild, just at zoos. I think they are funny animals with their long necks. It just seems he does not belong with his background, I guess that is from the post processing work you did to lighten the photo. Great shot, TFS.

Hi Kath,

A really beautiful shot and an excellent post editing job. Needless to say that is perfect with a vertical picture here, but it also creates a very attractive diagonal line starting with the giraffes right back leg and ending with its head. TFS!

Hello Kath! Amazing your pictures with the animals from the jungle. Here your picture has also something else big ...height!-)
Georgios

Hi Kath,
From what I have seen on the African safari television shows, leopards are the hardest of all the African animals to see. I guess that they are elusive and nocturnal anyway. It would be sheer luck for a tourist to see a leopard on any given day. The leopard and the jaguar (South American) are my two favorite animals. I love big cats. You did a great job with the giraffe and I love the way that you always try to include the animal's environment also. The layers in the distance are excellent. This is a wonderful travelogue that you a putting together! Marvelous!
Stan

salut kath
un animal nonchalant quand on le voit marcher, un gros ici pour le mettre en valeur, dommage pour le ciel mais que faire

Hi Kath,
A perfect profile shot of this magnificent animal. The work you did to achieve this result is much appreciated. I also really like the WS with two giraffs. Great shot again and TFS. GErald

Hi, Kath. The giraffe stands well out against the sky here and the vertical format makes us aware of its height. I also like the way the giraffe seems to be gazing at the lens. Even though the PP work is slightly visible (mainly around the giraffe), I think you did a very good job here.

Hello Kath
Fascinating and graceful animal which you managed to frame nicely. Of course, vertical framing was a must ;D
I like the different shades of the sky contrasting well with those of the ground and animal.
Greetings from Bangkok
Marilyn

Kath,
you're starting to sound quite horrible! What do you mean with " get a fairly sharp shot"? This shot is sharp as it can get! Your heavy PP work payed off extremely well. The post seems to be 3-D, something extremely fantastic. The giraffe seems so comfortable that I have the impression that you hipnotized it with your D200 ;-)
Fantastic shot!

Hi Kath,

It would be said that this superb giraffe poses for you!!! I like much framing on the animal. The colors and the definition of the image are superb. A painting would be said… Beautiful photograph, Kath cheer and thank you for the WS full with tenderess.

With all my friendships and a very good evening,

Jean-Charles

Hi Kath, I can see the halo that you mentioned to me, however sometimes this can't be helped & the positives out way the negatives, here you have a Giraffe standing tall & proud in it's natural surrounding, it still is a great capture of often a very shy animal, superbly composed & very good light with natural colours, TFS, kind regards Wilson.

Hello Kath,
Good framing of this superb giraffe, I like the great quality of this nice shot, very good work.

That's a strange animal. So huge, so fragile, so lovely colored, so... feminine ! A classical compo but it works here...

Hello Kath -

Considering the PP that you accomplished this is a nice image. The soft colors and the sharp animal all make for a wonder portrait. You sure are setting the bar high and I think I am going have a difficult time meeting it in August. Well done!

Thank you for sharing.

John

Good blending job Kath, looks a bit like one of those HDR shots - I guess it is really?
The colours and sharpness are really eye-catching.

Hi Kath,
I guess I say the same about all of your photos of this series, but again I am impressed how you could achieve such good compos with wild animals. Hats off also for the light adjustment and the sharpness, both are spotless. The blending looks perfect, one could think that you used a giant filling flash to achieve perfect exposure both for the giraffe and the sky. It's interesting the match of the tones of the animal skin and the sky.
I say the same about the WS, although the heads aren't as sharp as on this one.
Regards, José.

Hello Heather,

I was just wondering how far away you had to be to get the whole animal in frame! He is so elegantly tall!

You did well with your pp as this shot in no way suggests poor light! The detail of the giraffe shows up very well against the pinky tinged sky!
Great vertical composition.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Kath,
After the elephant's family, the giraffe.Another very beautiful photo of the Tanzania's fauna. The position "portret" is here very nice. I like also the background of this picture.
Have a good evening,

Hello Kath,
I like this giraffe posing for you, she looks like a professional model :o)
Good setting for this capture that was not easy, and good work with the light of the dusk, with a good improvement in PP.
The photographic and technical result is magnificent.
It is an excellent composition.

Hello Kath, I am always amazed by the patterning of the giraffe's skin, and here it shows up beautifully.I like the soft colours that the time of day has presented.
