My favourite animal while on safaris in Africa was the giraffe. There's nothing else like them - they look prehistoric, absurd, and elegant all at the same time.
Giraffes have very long necks, useful for accessing the leaves of trees. They possess seven vertebrae in the neck (the usual number for a mammal) that are elongated.
When our safari vehicle approached this one, it stayed still for quite a while and we got to see the animal quite close up.

Hi David, I'm envious of this shot, when I was in Africa I never got this close. They ran away, giving a great opportunity to photograph their backsides disappearing in the distance. You got some great detail in this, can even see the flies buzzing around it. The exposure is great throughout too, not even the clouds are blown out. well done. Cheers, Steve

Yea this is some good stuff. Great compo

Hi David,

This is an interesting image and you composed it very well. The features of the giraffe are sharp and you did very well by framing just the long neck and head. Good colours and details. Thanks for sharing :-)

Hey David,
I love giraffe's, they are just so strange. Great how its just the neck and head you captured here coming out of the thorn tree. Nice and sharp showing all its beautiful detail and its cool expression.
Regards
Wanda

Hi David,
I like the way you head shot captured this beautiful animal ... his awkward dimension makes the picture a little funny to look at ... as if his head is sticking out of a nest :) Well composed with very good resulting image quality! tfs
Cheers,
Renier

Hello David
I also love this animal with the long and thin neck and here we have a good approach to it, in a fine light which allows to see clearly the details!
Funny, the thorny branches remind me of a nest!
Cheers

Hi DAvid
The snake of this giraffe is like a snake ! Nice contrasts with the blue sky.
Beautifull picture

I love watching them move, a very elegant animal! This is a cute pose!! Very nice detail. Good job! TFS and have a great day!

Brilliant David
Love the cloud above the head, very good detail and colours in the giraffe and the comp you chose was superb. Like this alot

Nice safari shot and very good choice of a focal point. The vertical composition to emphasize the longness of the neck works here, only the sky is a bit bland, nice one.

Hi David,

Beautiful color and very beautiful light .. composed perfectly to amplify your thoughts. wonderful. take care, John

We only saw giraffes in the Chobe National Park but all of them at a considerable distance. They are indeed very cute(!!!) and charming(!!!). Your picture looks very funny because of the long neck and small head on top. It is a nice “portrait”. Well done.
Antonio

This really is a beautiful animal presented. Very sharp and beautiful.
Best wishes,
Achim

He looks a bit skinny. I can't remember the ones we saw with such thin necks. Excellent close up of his profile. It is wonderful to be so close.

Hello David
Great use of the zoom here to focus on the neck & head of this amazing animal. We can see some insects buzzing around it's neck as well. Like the frame & crop, with excellent light & exposure control. Good work!

Hi David
This portrayal of a giraffe's neck looks quite bizarre. Are those flies buzzing around? Well done, Marlene
