The Seronera Lodge as its name suggests is in the Seronera area of the Serengeti. More information about the Seronera area here It has been cleverly designed and built around a large kopje or rocky outcrop. The building you can glimpse is the bar and dining room. The bedrooms are behind me.

As I indicated in the link above, kopjes are lions’ favourite resting places. This particular kopje was owned by a pride of lions, who decided to take up residence again shortly after the lodge was built. That resulted in the lodge having to be closed until the lions departed. That kind of thing is a big negative of tourism in such a wild area, but it is the money brought in by the tourists that sustains and supports the National Park and its wildlife. Kind of a Catch 22.

This was taken pre-dawn on our last morning at this lodge as we were leaving for a dawn drive. I couldn’t resist taking a photo when I saw the moon. Without a tripod I zapped up the ISO and rested on a fence.

There is a shot of one of the lodge inhabitants in the WS

Hello Kath,
A very atmospheric feeling to this composition. The composition is good and the detail well captured under the moonlight. Very good colours and clarity.

A beautiful deep blue hour view, Kath, with a large fullmoon inside. Good quality and good timing too.
thanks, ciao

salut kath
un endroit protégé par les rochers dans un espace austère, la nuit dans un lodge pareil tu n'as pas peur des rock hyrak, gros rats qui pullulent dans la brousse, l'heure donne un beau coté sympa

A nice place for staying and to start for safaris. I like the perspective. This is an excellent night shot.
Best wishes,
Achim

Hello Kath -

Cold, windy, and snowy today and this image makes the day seem alright. I like the predawn image and the capture of the setting moon as this kind-of sets the scene for the morning drive. I have three comments; the moon (a difficult subject) is ever so slightly OE'd (no detail); it looks almost like the image is tilted to the right - this could be the slope of the landscape, but I just thought I would mention it; and IMO the FG could be opened just a little bit with Shadows and Highlights. Otherwise, a fine image.

Thank you for sharing.

John

Hi Kath,
Belle composition qui ce dessine a l'heure bleu avec la lune en prime, un joli endroit proche des animaux, mais sans oublier quand meme de bien fermer sa porte...compliment
good evening for you

Hi, Kath -

A very nice pre-dawn composition. Yes, the moon is blown out, but I know of no way to deal with that except perhaps HDR. And the light management is good here. The slight amount of noise is acceptable.

Best,
Dan

Hi Kath,

One should not forget to close doors and windows to spend a quiet night !!! Beautiful photograph on this splendid lodge in the twilight. Thank you for the complementary photograph on the unexpected visitor…

With all my friendships and a very good day,

Jean-Charles

Bonjour, mon amie Kath,
Endroit des plus sympathiques pour admirer l'environnement animal. L'heure bleue accentue l'intérêt de l'image.
Merci, également, pour la photo présentée en atelier.

Hi, Kath. There is a very nice morning atmosphere in your shot with the beautiful moonlight giving such a nice colour to the sky. I like the balance in the composition with the boulder on the left and the bush on the right framing the lodge.

Hi Kath
Well done for a hand held shot. I hope the lions were well away from here while you were up and about at this early hour. I guess they were or the lodge would not be operating.
Phil

Hi Kath,
A place of quiet solitude awaiting daylight. What an amazing setting for a place of refuge - and very well seen and captured. TFS. Gerald

You really do get the impression that you are there in this photo. A nice peaceful atmosphere is captured. Well done.
Best wishes
Mark

Bonjour Kath,
une atmosphère tout à fait inhabituelle.
Des couleurs fortes et des détails qui apparaissent bien malgré la faibleesse des lumières.
J'aime beaucoup ce ciel très particulier.

Imprsive feeling with the color of the sky and the moon there. The light on the rocks is very special. I personally like the overall dark feeling and the fact that you did not open too much in the shadows.

Nothing but praise for obtaining such a good result working whithout a tripod. Good equipment, steady hand and perfect eyesight! Congratulations,
John

Hi Kath,
It is arguable if it is such a good idea having occupied the lions place for building a restaurant, but it's undeniably a beautiful place. it's a lovely image, very well exposed and composed. Thank you also for introducing us that unexpected cousin of the elephants. I wonder if that is the reason for the rat being the animal that transports the Indian elephant god Ganesha on his back. :-)
Regards, José.

HI Kath.

I am sure with a tripod the photo would be much better.
But I have a question. A few days ago I was trying to take pictures at the night with the stars in the sky.
What how is possible get a focused photo?

About your photo, nice work but maybe too centered.

Carlos.

Hi Kath,

I could not resist to comment this picture since I still remember what you said about taking night shots in a note to one of your Prague pictures. This picture shows that you actually could take good night shots not only in big cities but anywhere and I guess that there are a lot of good opportunities also in your Yorkshire neighbourhood. The conditions when you took this shot were perhaps not the best. I have the impression that it was a little bit too dark. Moreover, the grass the rocks and everything else were very dark. A bright wall or light in a window would improved the situation. Very often your camera has difficult to know where to focus in such situation. And if you try to focus manually you have problems as well because of the darkness. Taking into account the conditions and that you did not even use a tripod I think you have done a wonderful job. Perhaps you should explore this field a little more? Have a nice week-end!

Cheers,

Ulf

Hola Kath.
A wonderful photo of the lodge taken before down with the presence of the full moon on top. Very well captured with good colors and POV. I like the feeling to be in a natural atmosphere as you were. Well done.
Cheers.

Place like this between 2 photos of lions, the photo looks even more telling with its fantastic light, there is an atmosphere of dream and mystery that I like a lot ! Great presentation,
Compliments,
Best regards,
Cath.

Hi Kath
But lions do tend to revisit their old lairs! I wonder to what effect if they do visit the bar..:-) Interesting view of the kopje with the moon shining so brightly. Maybe you could have opened up the FG a bit with shadow-highlights?! Well done.

Angshu

This is so pristine Kath. A lodge behind a huge rock surrounded by greenery and the moon against the stark blue sky looks really dreamy. Well done and best regards. Jusni

Hi Kath The hyenas must howl to the moon.
Nice place for holidays, very good lights management exposure, the balance between sky and foreground is well done.
What a strange big rock.
Cheers.

I can imagine the moment was great and cool, but I'm a little surprised by the way you composed it. Nothing special here except the light and the moon but then the dark part may be too big...
Stéphane

Hi Kath,
Your Africa shares are all dreamy, and causing sweet dreams to your beholders, unlike the ones in my gallery which cause nightmares :(
Though the moon is a bit frightening (becasue of the werewolves and vampires idea), the hidden house suggests a domestic shelter.
Inkish blue is really interesting.
Cheers,
Deniz
