The archipelago of Zanzibar is often known as the Spice Islands. There are many spice farms so we went on a tour of one. It was geared up more for tourists than being a working farm but it was an informative tour.

This man regularly climbed to the top of one of the tallest palm trees to throw coconuts down for the tourists; quite a feat. It’s not so clear on this one but he had rope round his ankles in a figure 8 to help him. You can see it more clearly on the WS. When he came down we all had coconut milk to drink.

To explain the title, he sang “Hakuna Matata” all the time he was going up and down. “Hakuna Matata” is the Swahili for “no worries”, often used as in “no problem”. Apparently one of the production team of the film “The Lion King” had heard the phrase used on safari in Tanzania, which gave rise to the song in the film by Elton John and Tim Rice.

This makes me smile as it reminds me of watching guys do this in Hawaii. It's a real TALENT!!! Both excellent pictures. TFS

Hello Kath,
A very nice capture of this tree climber, who seems very happy to be the centre of attention. I like how the palm fronds stand out against the sky; indeed the whole image has great detail. Pleasing tonal contrasts complete a very appealing image.

Kath,
Very pleasant one !
I like a lot the man attitude, and your light management is very good too.
Regards,
JB.

Hi Kath. This shot reminds me of a collector's card that I had as a child in France. They came in chocolate blocks, pudding packets and other items. It was of an African man climbing a coconut tree- but that card smacked of a colonial perception, as the man was depicted practically naked.Don't know why I am telling you this, but your photo brought the image vividly back to me.Regards. Klaudio.

Salut kath
bon POV de cette photo, le personnage parait encore plus grand avec ce palmier qui n'en fini pas de monter, beau travail

Bonjour Kath,
Very pleasant this one indeed...:o)
Good framing, good light and colours, very nice composition..!
Best regards,
Patrick

kath
this is fun. i like the way the coconut tree leaves makes up the top framing. the man is perfectly placed at the centre. the colors are perfect, with the white glow coming all around the man with surrounded by the blue sky. good capture...
cheers

Superb shot that is well composed and well exposed considering there was bright sky in the BG. I like the way you have the palm leaves draping down and framing the top of the image.
Phil

Hi Kath,
When i was young (no so long ago..haha) i also climbed like this. Very nice capture and a nice presentation with the big palm leaves on top which create a natural border. Light is excellent, hard but very well balanced and controlled...really good.
Have a nice weekend, Henk

Hi Kath
Yes; akunamatata; It's a so famous answer every where in Zanzibar.
You get here a very beautifull perspective.
Very nice
Bertrand

Hi, Kath -

Nice composition with the spread of the branches, and the guy has a great smile! Good note, too.

By the way, in Kenya, wazungu (Europeans and Americans) who can speak Swahili are less likely to say "hakuna matata" because of the Lion King song - everyone knows the tourists have all learned it (along with "jambo"). Instead, they (OK, we) say "hakuna shida" which means the same thing. On the other hand, "matatu" means a bus (actually a minivan used for local and long-distance routes), and makes a nice pun when the bus hasn't shown up (as often happens): "Hakuna matatu!"

Best,
Dan

Hi Kath,
Great photo of the man with an informative note about the farm and his job. Good vertical composition with the leaves well included in the foreground. The three large palm branches work as a wonderful background in the upper half of the photo. Very well done!

Lars

Hello Kath,

An unusual shot from your African safari, and the usual good note to educate us all. It's remarkable how athletic and specialized these young men are in climbing these palm trees without the cleats or the safety belt one expects. With the action shot in your ws, it is much easier to see his technique. The colors, resolution, and of course the composition all collaborate to make this a very good image.

Warm regards and have a good weekend,

Bulent

Bonjour Kath,
une autre photo qui me rappelle la Républque Dominicaine, ces hommes qui montaient dans les arbres pour décrocher les noix de coco, avant qu'elles ne tombent seules et blessent des gens.
Un homme qui à l'air bien sympatique.
Best regards.
Daniel.

Hi Kath,

Attractive combination of word and image.
No problem? But I don’t think I could climb into this palm tree with my bare feet. And looking at his smile I think this is a trifle for him.

Groet Rob

Hi Kath,
well what should I say? This is just a great scene you captured, the boy seems very happy. "Hakuna matata", I had to smile when I read the title, I can`t speak a single word Swahili, but I understood this one, quite famous. Great colors and POV, could it be the boy is a bit too sharp? I was just wondering, on some points it seems like that. But even if it is, that doesn`t disturb me because if somebody posts such a nice image I just have to love it. Great work! Btw, nice note!

Best regards
Mark

Hi Kath!Is indeed incredible the faculty of these persons, to go up in the trees. The picture has achieved the complete description of scene. In AS supplement perfect the way of help, but I him do not attempt. TFS

Bonne journée.

Hi, Kath. The 'climber' is very well place in the composition between the higher leaves of the palm tree and the lower ones of the shrub under it. I like the smile onhis face showing his self-conficence in this difficult exercise. The scene stands out very well against the sky.

Hello Kath,

An excellent POV which increases the height of the tree. Very beautiful natural framing with the sheets of palm tree. Expression of the man very well collected. A wonderful work.
Regards,
roger

merhaba dear kath

Hello Kath,
It is a very interesting and attractive composition, with very much dynamism and that shows us the peculiar way of climbing to the palms that these people use for a lot of time.
Good light and beautiful textures in your image, which is nice, spontaneous and has life great.
Best wishes,
Josep

Hi Kath,
What a beautifully-framed composition wirh the fine detail of the three palm fromds framing the joyful climber. It clearly required outstanding light management to get such great deatila on the man's mostly backlit face while still maintaining the delicate detail of the clouds. The WS does add importanmt detail; I've watched the tree-trimmer scoot up my Dad's palm rees with spike but just a rope is something else!!

Your note is also fascinating as you explain the origins of 'hakuna matata' It must have been really something to hear the phrase in its natural habitat.

Hi Kath,

I really enjoy your Zanzibar pictures. They are very original and are documenting something that probably will be gone in ten years time. This one is very well-composed with the man in the opening between the palm leaves and bushes. Even your placing of dry palm leaves behind the man is really well-done. TFS and have a nice Sunday!

Ulf

Hi Kath.

I cannot choose between the WS and the main post. Both are very good with these differents POV's.
Also good note about the "Hakuna Matata".

Regards.

Hello Kath,
I like the smile of this guy in the palm, good vertical framing and sweet tones, well done.
Regards

Wow what a vibrant shot! A great moment from Zanzibar. THe slight noise around the man is a slight shame. But the exposure work in this is just perfect, as are the colors.
Salaam!
Dave.

Excellent idea to have posted this photo, Kath, even if you protest that you are uncomfortable shooting people, I like very much this one for instance (and - maybe even more, the WS, more spectacular and telling !) I think that you had a slight problem with light (I noticed the "ISO400,(accidental)" in your note) and I don't know the correct answer to that one, but anyway we can see very well what it is about.
Anyway, I enjoy tremendously these photos,
Congratulations,
Cath.

Hello Kath,

Both of your shots are worthy of posting!
This one reminds me so much of the cover of a children's book but, for the life of me, I cannot remember which one!
Portrait style was a good choice with the tall vertical and it is nicely framed by the fronds. The man is obviously the focal point and how happy he looks! How many people do you know who are so pleased to be working!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Kath,
The life is not measured by the breathings that we inhale, but from the places and the moments where take our breath away.Excellent your shot from these magical countries that you travel us.Superb and the WS with the rope around his ankles.Informative your note too.

Have a nice weekend,Danos

Hi Kath. Nice take. Remembered Zanzibar as an island of cloves. Not sure. Both the shots especially the action in WS speak a lot about the feats which me too witnessed in our countryside. Quite informative too. Regards.

Hi Kath,
Une scéne qui ma impressionner de voir en Tunise, l'agilité et la rapidité qu'il peuvent avoir est surprenante, de plus içi il chante :-)
Bravo pour la prise de vue, aussi intéressante celle en WS

Hello Kath,
Excellent timing in capturing the guy on his daily duty. I know that is not easy to climb these palm trees. Very good composition and beautiful colors.

Hi Kath
I`m impressed by the abilities of the man climbing on the tree. I couldn`t even imagine how I would do it :). Beautiful perspective and colours.

Hi Kath,
I didn't remember any more the origin of the title of that Disney movie. It's a vivid and joyful portrait, very well framed as usual. His happy face would render any photo worth. The only thing less is the noise and grain on the climber, but those lapses happen to everyone. I like also the WS, it's great as documentary and it is almost noiseless.
Strange way to climb trees... As far as I remember, in Goa they use a rope around their waist.
Regards, José.

Hi Kath,

Hello Kath
"No Worries" seems to be written all over his face. Even I used to climb trees when I was young, but then coconut trees is always a difficult proposition, because it has nothing to grab. So guys in our country use ropes skillfully to climb up (similar to what you showed in the WS). Framing is amazing with the pair of leaves just seemingly enveloping the guy from the top, like an upward pointing arrow. And welcome to the accidental ISO setting club;-)
Best Regards
Angshu

And the light is there too...

Hello Kath
I love this kind of scene! I have also few ones similar but taken in India! Here, the vertical format fits well to the scene and I like very much the way this man is looking at you with a big smile;)while coming down. Interesting note too...
