This is where we stopped for a picnic breakfast while we were in the Ngorongoro Crater. There were so many birds about, it was advisable to keep the lid on the picnic boxes as they were cheeky enough to steal your breakfast. If you look under the spreading branches of the tree to the left and in the water you can see some brown dots. It wasn’t until I processed the image and was checking it at 100% that I realised they were hippos! Hippos kill more people in Africa than any other animal does.

Details about the Ngorongoro Crater can be found here.

Hi Kath

Good sharpness & colour, with nice symmetry, between the 2 gliding birds at left. The people at right add scale. Well done!

Hello Kath,

Have a nice day

***Hippos kill more people in Africa than any other animal does.*** That is why our guide always carefully checked both sides before crossing the channel.
It is a great African landscape with a good POV and colours. The presence of the tourists adds to vastness of the place. Well done.

Hi Kath,
Well balanced photo, perfect position for the tree, good colors with different one on each plan (road, water, grass, mountaine, sky...).
I like the presence of the people that give an idea of the scale of the landscape. And also the birds on the sky, particulary the bird on the left.
Good job!
Best regards,
Olivier

Hi Kath,

I think that the birds are not too savage in these regions… especially when there is something to eat. Superb place for a stop picnic. This large tree with the quite green foliage brings a beautiful balance to the image. I like much, just like this beautiful complementary image showing us this pretty small freeloader. When I read your note, it is necessary to avoid taking a bath of feet in this lake…

With all my friendships and very good Sunday.

Hi Kath
It's a beautiful shot with excellent sharpness and DOF. The composition is also great. A 'textbook' example of the rule of third theory with the tree =)
Well done.
Toby

Hello Kath,
Looks a very nice place for a picnic with the tree providing a welcome area of shade. Good point of view, the soaring birds are a nice bonus. Pleasing soft light and colours.

Hi Kath,
Very nice scene, very well captured. Good pov and amazing compo. Great the hidden details like the Hippos at back and the flying birds just looking for the "almose"s of the picknickers !
TFS and best regards
MESUT ILGIM

Excellent cadrage avec cet arbre sur la droite et les rapaces sur la gauche.

Hi Kath
A nice peaceful scene that sounds like it could become dangerous if the hippos decided they liked the smell of your breakfast. Nicely exposed and well composed with the tree off center.

Good the point here, and good choice of picture. The impressive tree dominates the scene and the individuals picnic indifferently, but beautifully supplements the composition.,Good work calm and balance of Afrikan landscape, in the image pretty nice on the lake, these birds.

Hi kath
very good picture
I often saw these trees.
You captured those very well with the lake and the tourist having picnic.
good colours and nice moment(the birds flying around the tree)
But i´m a bit wondering why the people is allowed to get out of car.
Best regards Toba

Hi Kath

Hi Kath,

Hello Kath,

Where are the animals ? Ah yes, two birds .)
Very beautiful vew of a superb varied landscape. This people allow to appreciate dimensions of this lanscape.
NB I like also the small yellow bird in annexe.
Regards,
Roger

Kath,
Again nice natural compo.
This landscape is great, and your compo suits it.
Colors and exposure are perfectly working too.
Regards,
JB.

Hello Kath,
This one looks like a very agreeable place for a picnic, sat under this enormous tree, with the water and a fabulous landscape.
You have managed skilfully the strong light and have obtained a great depth of image and a few very natural colors.
The birds flying they give a very dynamic touch, and the people offer us a good reference of the local scale.
It is a magnificent work, my friend.
Best wishes,
Josep

Hi, Kath. You've chosen a well-balanced composition with the tree on the right and the birds on the left, which are two centres of interest. The people having their picnic under the tree give the scale. You've also used the shoreline to create a diagonal line in the foreground. I see you were at a safe distance from the hippos when shooting ;o).

Hi Kath,
Looks like such a welcoming sort of environment here. Very well seen and I am sure you reflect back often to the good times on this trip. Good you stayed well back from the submersed hippos! Great shot and TFS. Gerald

Looks simple but composition is very good, the two birds add a decisive interest to the shot IMO.

Cheers

Hi Kath, beautiful one. An image that should be used on a cover of a Doris Lessing book!
beautifulc colours, light and composition, but a wonderful mood.
thanks, ciao

Hello Kath -

Hope the snow this past weekend was just a dusting and not a major storm. This is a lovely spot for a picnic it looks like a great place to relax and photograph the wildlife and birds. Hippo's? I need tor make a not of that, interesting. I thought elephants, the big cats, or the croc's were the culprits. Anyway, well seen and captured.

Thank you for sharing.

John

Hello Kath. Gorgeous view for a break. I like the canopy of the big tree and you have placed it right on the sweet spot. The lake, the tall grass and the mountain are so pristine with birds flying low making it very lively. Regards. Jusni

Hello Kath
The composition is very striking thanks to that gorgeous tree which you have placed so carefully on the right. The birds in flight are such a nice touch and add to this wonderful view. A beautiful photo.
Best wishes
Mark
PS Tell me more about your D300!!!

Hi Kath,
Another excellent job of sharing this magical place with us. As usual your composition is superb! Hippos are scarry and I also have heard that, next to the misquito (malaria and other diseases), they kill more people in Africa than any other animal. They look like foul-tempered, territorial and aggressive looking animals to me. Great travel shot!

Hi Kath,
You went through an unexpected adventure without knowing it... The place looks so idyllic that it's hard to believe that it can be dangerous. I had my share of scary surprises with rhinos in Nepal.
The place must be a dream for bird watchers, as they look quite bold and easy to spot.
Regards, José.

Hello Kath,
The lonely tree theme never seems to fail!
This specimen is most impressive, and also provide some most welcome shade for humans around...
A perfect classic composition, great feeling of depth!

HI Kath.

I never could imagine hippos were so dangerous.
Well, I think the photo and the note are good, but those people are not what I imagine in Africa.

Regards.

Hi Kath, impressive photo. Your POV is the right one for this kind of shots, applying well the rule of thirds. You transfer the mood in the most effective way.
Thank you for sharing it

Hi Kath,
thought I'd come back and finish up your safari. The photo has lovely balance with the tree beside the water. What makes it truly exceptional is the detail you captured in the bird in flight and the distant green sweep of the crater. I'm adding to mny collection of birds in flight, okay?
How do hippos kill people and more importantly why. They are vegetarians I believe. Is it like the statistic that moose kill more people than bears in Alaska? That would be when people strike tham at high speed with their cars on the roadway.
