After we left the Serengeti National Park we headed for the Ngorongoro Crater. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is part of the Serengeti Ecosystem, SE of and bordering the Serengeti National Park. It is an area of highlands with its highest point 3,700m above sea level. The Ngorongoro Crater is one of nine craters and calderas in the conservation area. In actual fact the Ngorongoro Crater is a caldera (collapsed crater) and not an actual crater as such. Before its collapse it is said to have been 4,587m above sea level, still not as high as Mt Kilimanjaro at 5,895m.

We stayed in a lodge on the crater rim with spectacular views and spent a day on the crater floor viewing a wide variety of wildlife. The floor is roughly elliptical in shape, 21km x 18km.

There are thought to be about 1300 Grant’s Gazelle in the Ngorongoro Crater. Numbers fluctuate with the seasons, as many of them migrate. Commonly, males battle for supremacy in the herd by locking horns. I don’t think either of these two were serious and were just making a ritualistic posture.

Hello Kath,

Une belle symétrie. Le placement des gazelles imposait une composition centrée.
Tu as bien cadré ta photographie et ce format panoramique convient tout à fait la situation.
Bravo.

They posed so nicely for you :) A really great moment captured. Also an interesting note. TFS

Hi Kath,

These two have seen so many tourists, one can wonder if they are not actually posing for you when a Land Rover full of cameras passes by! ;-P
But a nicely sharp take it is. Good DoF!

Dennis

So much action and life! Very pleasant composition, lovely colours and a very good point of view.
Best wishes,
Achim

Hi Kath,
A nice crop and framing, just as the light which was on your hand here. Would love to see the real fight, but have to admit this looks much more peaceful.
Off to work now...take care, Henk

Amazing preview of a eminent struggle yet... it doesn't occur... thought.. :)

A very sharp image with the subjects in the most favourable position of the DOF amplitude; as we can clearly see the details of the green in the foreground.
TFS Kath
Rui

Nice "daily life" shot ;) I like the symmetry here, clicked at the right moment! Hope it all went OK for them...:)

Cheers

Bonjour Kath
De belles couleurs douces et un très bon cadrage de la composition dans le format image choisi.Une image soignée.
Bonne journée.
Amicalement

Hello Kath,
A good capture of these two gazelles facing each other off. Colours look natural and the clarity is excellent as usual. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Kath,
Very nice symmetric shot of these gazelles staring to the eyes of each other. Simple background doesn't take away the attention from gazelles. Light is rather intense but that's how it is most of the time.
Kari

It seems a mirror image, ...fabulous capture Kath, and as always perfectly composed by you, all my compliments!!

have a nice weekend,
Fabio.

Hi, Kath. The panoramic format you've chosen helps us focus on two gazelles facing each other. I like the nearly perfect symmetry in their posture. Good contrast between their coat and the grass behind them.

Head vs head!
excellent composition Kath, with the 2 gaelles frozen in the picture, colorful and full of light.
thnaks, ciao

Hi Kath, this is again a seriously graphic take on East African wild life and I like it a lot! It adds very nicely to the well rendered tension that's building up between the Gazelle's here. Beautiful work with subtle colours.
Have a fine weekend,
Bert

Well done Kath!

I like the semi panorama look you have here. The excess space in the pre-cropped image I can guess was not helping the scene at all. This is well focused and all of the technical details are spot on.

Did you ever see Hatari with John Wayne? The film was made in the area of Arusha. I can still see Momma Timbo and the baby Elephants wrecking the town.

Thank you for sharing.

John

Hello Kath,
I like the good symetry of the two animals, good framing too, well seen and captured.
Regards

Hi Kath,
I love your leopard shot and you MUST post it on TE! I like the gazelles and Impalas as much as I like the larger animals. Another beautifully composed safari photo and your WS photo gives us an amazing view of the vastness of this area. These gazelles look graceful and harmless enough to us, but I am quite sure that they are very powerful animals. Wonderful shot!

Hi Kath,
C'est un moment particulier bien saisi, on dirais presque qu'elle se regarde dans un miroir, tellement elles se ressemble, un format bien adapté et de belles couleurs, compliment
Have a nice Weekend for you

Hi, Kath -

Great spotting! Not the rutting season, so it's most likely a fight over territory. Or, as you say, just practicing. I've seen a few of these, but each time was pure luck. Great positioning; it does look just a touch oversharpened, but that could be my monitor.

Best,
Dan

Hi Kath,

First steps of a combat which will be hard. Good timing on this scene. The colors are once more very pleasant and beautiful management of the lights. I like much your complementary photograph and the definition of the image. the contrast of the tourists with the marvellous landscape is seizing. Nikon D200 is really a good camera. Thank you Kath.

Hi Kath,
Great wildlife shot again. Very interesting animals in a posture of aggression but maybe, as you say, no harm intended. Your composition is excellent as are the colors and overall image impact. Well done and TFS. Gerald

Excellent composition and perfect moment to capture such place and such scene. An almost symmetric image. you have done a great series on wild animals.

Great mirror-image shot Kath. For what look like timid creatures, they give each other a right battering, don't they!? I really like the limited DOF to focus sharply on the gazelle and nowhere else - it makes for a gread 3-D feel. Superb work. Paul.

Hi Kath,

I was wondering if there were anymore animals to photograph after wildebeests, zebras, elephants, giraffes, hippos, ostriches, lions. So many that I might even have forgotten some. I am really impressed how you all the time managage to find excellent POVs. Photographing animals are a bit like photographing people they are moving, turn away, hide etc. This shot from the side is just perfect. TFS and have nice weekend!

Cheers,

Ulf

Hello Kath,
I like a lot the attitude you caught, and this tight framing is a great choice.
Brightess is attractive too.

The pose is excellent and you were lucky to capture that scene. The thin horizontal frame was the best choice.

another quality wildlife photograph. I seen your portfolio it seems you've already perfected safari photography. tfs and please keep on posting.

Hi Kath
This a great shot of these gazelles engaging one another. The technical aspects of this image are spot on. Well seen.
Phil

Hello Kath,

I enjoyed reading your notes. All these places are familiar from watching wildlife programmes, most likely with David Attenborough.

What a privilege to see these beautiful animals! You have captured them with splendid sharpness and excellent details. Their coats have a subtle shade of colours which is probably excellent for camourflage.

You have superbly frozen this confrontation in time! Just look at the eye contact!
A great series of shots, Karen!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Dear Kath,
Incredible timing,everything is perfect:)
Thanks for sharing,
Zeynep Erek

Kath,
the facing of the two males is so typical and reminds so well of my time at Kruger Park (South Africa) somewhere in the 80's. The male gazelles's were always ready to test each other, while the female didn't bother and continue the grazing.
Teh light seems difficult in the management here and some parts, mainly the white body parts, seems to be at the limit of overexposure.
Peter

Great sharpness and nice symmetry in this shot Kath.

Interesting what Peter says and your reply - I'm actually starting to wonder now about my monitor cos a few times now I think images have looked brighter to me than to others. On TFT monitors it also seems to depend on the angle you're viewing from and therefore the height of your monitor on the desk. I am looking slightly down on my screen and this seemed a bit bright, but if I lower my head till I'm dead level with the middle of the photo it looks spot on! However if I look at the calibration thingy dead level I can't differentiate between the 3 darkest squares at all. Hmmm.

Anyway great shot, and great notes as always.
cheers
Leon

Hello Kath,
excellent capture of these lovely gazelles in not so known attitude. They're on an amazing place of light and colour and the overall composition couldn't be better, with the golden colour of their coat balancing the green grass. Very good note as well.
Kind Regards.

Very nice double portrait. I like very much posture of these two. You got very nice result under the strong light. These two really radiate light. Amazing.

Olá Kath, I can pick up my favorite weekly animal from your gallery ;-) The lady giraffe almost won, but then these two young fellows are in such a lovely symetric pose and there's a superb bonus in WS, also with a nice double situation (would make an excellent primary post). Yes, they don't seem to be fighting at all, so delicate and elegant animals they are. Your capture is beautiful in and the enjoyable panoramic format suits perfect the subject.

Hi Kath,
You have two severe flaws in the image: the right border is further away from the left animal by at least 2 pixels than on the right! :D The same goes to the DOF: it should be half an inch shallower. :D
Now, seriously... I can't notice any minor flaw or room to improvement. It's a wonderful image, superbly executed.
I like the WS very much also. We feel like being behind those ladies enjoying the view and those fabulous games of light and shadow on the lake and its banks.
