Photographer’s Note
Seaweed is a major crop on Zanzibar. It is harvested, dried on racks, and taken to a central collection and shipped to the far east where it is processed to make soles for shoes as well as food. On Pongwe Beach, local residents put wooden stakes into the seabed to collect the seaweed that comes in with the tide. Each day, during the morning low tide, women harvest the days' collection of seaweed.

Hi Micheal,
An interesting slice of aquaculture at the lagoon. I like the format and the soft-colours - there is a nice similarity between the lime green shirt of the lady and the colouration of the swathes of deeper water behind her. And it is interesting to see this form of work. I would imagine she is harvesting the red alga Eucheuma, although it is more a greeny brown!
I am intrigued by the dark object in the top right - is that another person working? Just wondering.. TFS Casper
