Zanzibar legendary Stone Town alleys.

Two things struck me in old Stone Town : firstly it was not that easy to catch photos of people in the streets, even kids ran away from the cameras, secondly photography was better at noon and almost impossible at the golden hours.

Because of the narrowness of the streets, if you ever wanted to have any chance of showing light, it had to fall vertically, in the hottest part of the day.

This is probably the most photographed alley intersection in Stone Town, I have already spotted it in Bertrand's (devimeuxbe) portfolio.
Two kids holding their hands coming back from the coranic school.

This place is called "Lebanon brothers corner" due to the tag you can spot on the right hand side. It is also subtitled "Lebanon brothers are better than the west".

I was intrigued by the tags and tried to find out what was the object of such agenda. According to some american reviews, this place located in the heart of the Old Stonetown is where the islamists sell their most hardline policy to the young muslims. Although the Swahili coast has been shaken in the past with antiwest actions, like in neighboring Mombasa, Zanzibar has been kept safe from those yet...

I adore the light and shadows Luko. I like how you are able to see the two clearly in the foreground. Everyone is placed perfectly in your frame. The blue boy in the light against that dramatic door is killer.

Regards,
Brian

Hop, Zepi le retour....
S'lut Luko !
Ca gazouille ?
Je découvre ta série du Zanzibar à l'instant, et je dois avouer que je suis agréablement surpris du résultat.
T'as imposé ton oeil et ta patte ici.
C'est différent, moins léger, plus intimiste aussi je trouve !
J'accroche bien

Sumptuous, glorious shot Luko. I mean if that's all the 5D and Canon glass can acieve, you should run straight to Nikon ;o)))
Perfectly timed and "paced", everything revolves around this lone adult with is bags there, at the intersection of so many things... around him the islamized or soon to be youth scurryin around back to the Madrassa maybe. I sense the man is not into that, more nto business but as he sniffs the hot air around him he know that "times have changed".
I love this shot, Luko and feel even more strongly now that through its venaility, greed for tourist dollars and disapointments, Africa has simly inspired some of your best photography in a while. Just my 02 centimes....

So many great elements to this shot Luko. The little boy perfectly framed by the doorway, the furtive glance from the hurrying man, the out stretched hand of the little girl seemingly feeling for the wall. Yet despite the harshness of the light you have managed it perfectly.

Best regards, Roberto

These light and shadow games are clearly your mark. Got to pay more attention to these scenes. The brown tones are very beautiful and the action in the lit section is my favorite ball game here. Very nice.

I like the way the people all on their seperate way, seem to intersect with each other as they cross paths, similar to the shadow cutting its way through the shot.

Not the most obvious photo upon initial viewing, one that grows on you the more you look at.

I know why you like this one Luko; I also like the three person composition (with the kids at bottom right being a two fer one deal). For me though, I wish for different light. I can't really fault the exposure, but I find it hard to look at the middle guy because he is so contrasty against the background.

Hello Luko
Great street view, this place looks much calmer than I expected.
Your light management is excellent. I am intrigued how you managed to do capture the sunburnt portions so well as well as capturing so much detail of the kids under the shadows at the same time.
Cheers
Daniel

Superb use of harsh shadows and hard light, and a terrific moment to capture. The triangle, as always, does not fail in its ability to encapsulate the mood; timing of the middle head's turn to the left to rhyme with the oncoming boy is astute.

Your note is interesting, informative, and has a crisp feel of the best of reportage.

wow Luko, fantastic image...
the game of the light, the different positions of the persons walking in different directions, the blue of the dresses...
a great work also with the exposure...perfectot show details of the children in the dark..
GREAT!
ciao!
Valeria
