Market Scene Series - Episode 01
While a social debate is going on around the western world concerning the use of the niqab, the hijab or the burka in public space, in the narrow streets of Stone Town, it's rather the norm.
Considering the unbearable hot weather and humidity of Zanzibar, it's difficult to imagine how these women can cope with additional layers from head to toe.
On the practical side, if they have a bad hair day, no one will notice.

Hello Andre - This is interesting. Some years ago when we visited Zanzibar we saw very few ladies wearing full black like these do here. Most of the women seemed to wear vibrantly coloured clothing with covered or veiled heads and faces. I wonder if the island has become more strict since the advent of more intense tourism?
An interesting look at DL in Zanzibar, I loved Stone Town with its labyrinthine streets and alleys.
Warm regards Rosemary

Indeed in a lot European countries becomes very busy debated about these costume, also in Belgium are these costumes not allowed, alone a headkerchief.
Your picture is made in an other country than Europe, where this is completely normal.
It's always good that you this type picture brings on TE, the different cultures in the world.
Excellent captured, nice presentation.
Very well done, TFS.
Have a nice day,

Am I being sexist if I say, I couldn't imagine men walking around covered head to toe in black. You show quite a contrast in your photograph.
It is a well composed shot, using a strong f/g triangle into which the figures are placed.
It is very pleasing to be able to observe this face to face interaction without being observed oneself. I suppose it fulfils people's enthusiasm to 'people watch'.
Have a good w/e,

Hello Andre - a simple but effective shot in highlighting what is a difficult and multi-layered (pardon the pun) debate around the world - from some of Europe's outright ban to the intra-national discussions in much of the Muslim World. Thanks for that, and also for a nice look at daily life in Zanzibar.

What an interesting note - I'd never before thought that wearing a niqab, a hijab or a burka would be a perfect excuse for a bad hair day!
But I suspect that these dress accountrements can also be misleading - as a retired surgeon I well remember occasionally seeing young nurses in the operating theatre with the most stunning eyes looking out over the tops of their face masks, only to be severely disappointed when they took off their masks and revealed their full faces.
Your photograph is delightful and has wonderful soft light and lovely natural colours, giving splendid details of the two ladies and also of the market stall and the vendor. A very well taken shot with perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.
