Photographer’s Note

Dar es Salaam at dawn

6:20 am. Was it before or after the muezzin had intoned aloud the first call of the day inviting the Muslims to prayer? Don’t remember, but do remember well the atmosphere of that early morning. I’m on the balcony of our modest hotel room. My teenage daughter is still sleeping under her mosquito net. The city is waking up. A rooster is sporadically crowing. Many men are already out and gathered in small groups. They chat, perhaps talking about yesterday news, or planning something for the day. In any case, they seem to be enjoying this cool hour, knowing the sultry ones that are soon coming. And I think that perhaps I should take a picture of that skyline.
