Photographer’s Note

Karanga camp is located 3900 meters over the sea level and it´s the previous one to the Base campament of Barafu (at 4600 meters). Not all the people stops here, but it´s quite advisable because allows you to get used to altitude and beside, the landscape is superb and you have the all evening to walk around, but very "pole, pole" (slowly in Swajili, one of the main important lenguages in Africa), in fact I decided to do everything "pole, pole", even to think, and I am sure this is one of the reasons I have not experienced any altitude sickness at all. I felt up there like at home.
Here you have some flowers, up from this Karanga campament, the vegatation dissapears and just rocks all around the path are left, kind of landscape of "The lord of the rings".
I´ve brought some flowers to TE today, I hope you like it, I hope we achieve to preserve it. Take care.

I have learnt an useful proverb in Swahilii which seems to be quite relevant to the situation :
"Mungu alitolandika haliwezi kufutika" and even more relevant
Haraka, haraka kaina baraka ;-D.
And a few more of useful ones which were enough to stop my guides from demanding more tips form me ;-)

Hello, Daniel--
i like what you did with this one, putting the bright life of the flowers against the mysterious, desolate heights of Kilimanjaro... but i feel like maybe it could have been a little bit more powerful with a little less DOF... Normally i wouldn't think that, but as i look at the mountain surrounded by clouds, i feel like just a little softer focus would have added to the mystery and allowed the flowers to pop more without being in conflict with the mountain for attention.
But still a very nice piece.

Muy buena composición, Miguel:

Las flores (estupendo color y muy buena luz) son un punto de partida realmente interesante, muestran muy bien el cambio de ambiente y subrayan marcadamente la distancia y la profundidad. Un elemento pequeño en el primer plano como éste hace que sintamos más aún la grandeza de la montaña. Muy bien pensada, con muy bellos colores. Las nubes, finalmente, subrayan muy bien la altura y lejanía del Kili...

A really beautiful shot Miguel and the first one i have seen of your ascent of Kilimanjaro - the composition is really just wonderful such a nice balance of fore, mid and back ground - a lovely shot and a good insight into your expereince from your note too.

Miguel,
that is a wonderful composition and exactly as I like it and try to photograph. To have a interesting and engaging element if the foreground is so important. It opens the image and invites someone to enter the landscape that you want to show with your photography. Your flowers provide the perfect opening ceremony to enjoy the partially cloud covered Kilimandjaro.
So, "pole, pole" is the key to success, huh? Funny, it didn't work out so well for me when I went to Khala Pattar at Mt Everest base camp. I had terrible headaches, nausea, lack of apettite, etc. Th eonly thing that helped was going down as fast as possible.

El diafragma tan cerrado te ha obligado a una velocidad de disparo muy alta, lo que da un poco de "movimiento" a la foto.

I´m back to trekearth after a long absence. I'm also back to your gallery.
This shot is quite good. I bet this photo is one of those that we shoot and look to display of digicam... and we think - "yes, i think i did it. Let´s see it in computer!"
In fact your photo is a good composition, great DOF, and flowers bring some life back into the landscape. I think your main objective was achieved
