Hills of giant pebbles
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Driving from Khartoum towards the temples of Naqa and Musawwarat es Sufra, you will pass some desert with big piles of pebbles.
(About 80 kilometers north north-east of Khartoum)
Or at least it looks like a big pile of pebbles. But have a look and see how small the car is on the picture, just for an idea of the size of these hills.
They are spread out over a big plain and it's not clear how they ever got there and why exactly in this location!
It's not man-made (though it looks like giants have been playing with pebbles) and therefor I assume that there was a gigantic river here millions of years ago, since the rocks are curved really smoothly and that can only be done by water.
Nevertheless no hard evidence on the reason why these pebbles are here, but it's nice to have the imagination going and make up great reasons how these hills got there. |

Interesting location Dennis + very useful inclusion of jeep for scale.
Looks a bit like grantite to me. Possibly a strata of granite pushed up in places by volcanic pressure under the ground - long, long ago, the softer rock in the area has been ruduced to sand, revealing these piles which have fractured and split over millenia.

Colin
A giant baby did play here before? I like the composition, and specialy the 4x4 vehicle, wich helps scaling this enormous "pebble stones".
