Photographer’s Note
These two girls had just finished washing clothes in the River Nile. They were with their mother who wanted me to take a photograph of them, which was quite unusual. Washing clothes is always girls'/women's work in Sudan, as with many other countries around the world. Washing clothes in open waters is standard practice in many African countries.
(Malakal is in Upper Nile State)
