Photographer’s Note
Small corner shops are a huge part of Sudanese life. With no supermarkets (except those that service the limited expat community) these tiny, cramped places are an 18 hour a-day source of the basics in tinned goods, biscuits and cool drinks.
This is a photo I took of one such shopkeeper. The day before yesterday I met his kids playing in the street and took their photos - the plan was to deliver copies to the 'dukkan'(shop) today. When I got there Mohammed wanted his photo taken too - so this is a commission portrait. Tomorrow I'll take him the print and hopefully get some more relaxed pics with the WA lens.
I chose to use a reasonably shallow DOF - I have been experimenting on this recently - another skill I have to master. I think this DOF is just a little too deep; but I don't like to use a blur in workflow - it seems too much of a cheat. Just used curves and USM (50,3,0) twice.
Mohammed is by the way yet another really lovely Sudanese guy.

Nice portrait, I would also like to see a shallow DOF here, the colours are very rich. Weldone.
