Photographer's Note

Al Khalifa Square is located in the centre of Omdurman.

Al Khalifa in Arabic is the governor of an Islamic country. This khalifa was Al Kahalifa Abd Allah Al Ta'ayshi and he was the next governor after Al Mahdi.
Al Mahdi was the famous Mahdi of Sudan, a religious and political leader of Sudan in the second half of XIX century who led the national uprising against the British and Egyptians.

The square is used for the Islamic and national celebrations specially the birthday of Prophet Mohamed. This celebration takes twelve days during which there are many Islamic festivals.

On the very left you can see the Khalifa mosque. The building with a steep dome is the Mahdi's Tomb.

The memorial is new. It symbolises the National Unity of Sudan.
