Sudanese dogs are really in a group on their own. In Khartoum they often are left to wander the streets. In the rainy season (which is right now) the air is so humid and the temperature so high that like eveybody else the look for shade in any corner. You can often find one or more dogs lying under the shade of a parked lorry or wallowing in a stagnant pool of water.
They are also rather fickle. They tend to like to take a bite out of cyclists. One notorious dog in a friend's neighbourhood took a chunk out of me one day. I carried on home and when I got there my guard asked me what had happened. He then asked me if I had killed it. When I said no he seemed intent on going over himself with a big stick. I told him it would be much better if he just beat me if I started to froth at the mouth in the next few days. Some things are just so different in Africa!
This is a friend's dog. Taken late in the day I sw the moon in the bacground and thought it might be fun. I did think about increasing the size of the moon in photoshop for more poetry but decided against it - I probably would have considered it cheating in a way. But if anyone else would like to have a go... feel free.
