Photographer’s Note

In the heart of the maize producing Freestate is a small railway siding called Windfield. Here six towering grain silos are filled with the season's maize crop. Once in a week or two a train arrives bringing a few empty wagons to be filled with the stored maize. The loaded wagons are then collected to take the grain to the big mills in Natal.
This siding has a small platform that has long since crumbled and yielded to grass and weeds. It was used to board the train by the occasional traveler in the heyday of the railways.
