Five-arch bridge Photo

Photographer’s Note

This is a shot of the sturdy Five-Arch Bridge near Waterval Boven in Mpumalanga, declared a a national monument in 1963. It was constructed of dressed stone cut in Italy.

The bridge carried the famous "Eastern Line" or "Oosterlijn" railway track accross the precipitous gorge of the "Dwaalheuwel Spruit". It opened to rail traffic on 20 June 1894 and the rack rail ran along the bridge until it was no longer needed.

The bridge was then converted to a road bridge and served as such for many years until the new tunnel was constructed next to the NZASM Tunnel (about 1.5kms away), and the present road was completed.

I like this photo, the anglr and ligth are great. The note it's excelent. This is a documentary, thanks for sharing, a learn samething today :)

Very brave of you to stop there for a picture. I have stopped doing it. This is a good PJ shot of the bridge. It would be nice if you can shoot it in some gentler light, late or early day, when you will have more oomph in the light off the rocks. But take care of the robbers!

Fine choice of shooting angle to show us this bridge, Judy. While you are focusing on this piece of architecture which is very well described in your note, you also manage to show it within the beautiful landscape that it is surrounded by. The reddish-brown color hues in the stones are very nice. A good and crisp shot, well captured.

a very interesting bridge, it looks like a Roman bridge in Spain or France. Great light emphasize the textures of the stones. You could clone the electricity pole there, but still, well done, Judy.

Nice composition Judy - I like the way you've included the top of the hill in the background. Lovely colour in the old stone bridge and those arches are beautiful.

Trés bon contraste avec un angle bien choisi qui donne cette architecture en parfaite valeur sur ce ciel bleu.
