I took this photo while I was at a conference in Sun City, a big casino and holiday resort in the North-West of South Africa (about a 2 hour drive from Johannesburg).
The resort, which resembles a tropical paradise, is quite impressive, because all of it was created right in the middle of the harsh African Bushveld.
This was taken on one of the many footpaths that surround the main hotel (The Palace of The Lost City). This walkway is called the Spider Trail, and the bridge is aptly named the Spider Bridge.
Note: I struggled to find the right exposure for this shot, because there was a big difference between the shadows and the very bright sky above. As you can see I ended up with 1/25 of a second (hand-held!).

Neat. Looks scary and Inviting at the same time. Just like the Spider to the Fly :-)
Pictures like this make this site really cool and deserving of frequent visits.

Curious bridge! I like the perpective very much and the "shade to light" view. The sky is a bit overexposed but that's hard to control being in a dark place... Nice greens.

Very well seen and composed. Like it.

It was not necessary to miss this recording!
Very beautiful composition with the various tints of colour and this first-rate perspective.

Very good composition and perfect photo.

This is really effective. You have captured the lighting on the bridge superbly. Like Jose, I find the sky a bit distracting. If this were mine, I would be tempted to crop to just above the first 'thingy' and crop a bit off the bottom to restore the balance. I think that a squarish format would would work well for this -- but then again I seem to be going through a squarish-format-phase.
Porteplume (3468) 2003-10-20 5:52
Nice observation! Light and sharpness are very well used to let see the details and adding depth in the picture, but I think I would have cropped the top & bottom a little more...
padam (186) 2003-10-20 5:54
Lightning conditions made this shot challenging, but you succeeded to capture this spider web nicely. DOF remains stunning with this aperture. Really well done.

Very well selected angle and position made this special shot with nice symetris shapes and intersting lighting!

Bravo.
Nina (5003) 2003-10-20 8:34
Very nice Henry, well seen and photographed. I would crop out the overexposed sky, you don't need it. Cropping just above the first arch concentrates the eye to the "tunnel" effect.

Bravo.

Nice shot, looks to me like an entrance to a parallel world. The note is very interesting too, well done!

Very interesting perspective, and deep effect.
Very original shape and estructure too.
Africa! eh! Never been there!
Beautiful tones, soft and gentle bridge, I will have no fear to go across, it reminds me thouse in Indiana Jones!

Frame on frame on frame, lovely light and exposure spot on!
ronners (10) 2003-10-20 13:59
This one demonstrates the main advantage of a 'point and shoot' digital camera - almost infinite DOF at any aperture due to the small CCD. If I tried f/2.8 on my D100 I would a) need an extremely expensive lens, and b) have a depth of field of about 2 feet! Nice work Henry, especially under those conditions.

Light and composition make this image almost magic!

Over-exposure of the sky, it is simple to eliminate in WS. This composition is very excellent. I have the feeling that while crossing the bridge I will lose balance and fall.
richtersl (3546) 2003-10-20 15:49
What a wonderful photo! Can't add else much to what's already been said.
It's a pity that the sky is overexposed, but as Didi pointed out, it is easily correctable.

Perfect photo! Invitation to the wildness...
Motrem (2392) 2003-10-29 6:08
And say that I almost missed this photo! I find the excellent composition with well saturated colours. So net image that we can go(surrender) up to the bottom of the bridge. Very well made.

This is a wondefull photo Henry. Everything has been said, but I just wanted to add that I love the feeling of perspective that it gives out.

I think you did very well to expose this correctly given the challenging lighting conditions: it could easily have gone wrong. I haven't tried it myself, but had you a tripd, I believe one way to approach this type of problem is to take two shots. One exposing for the shadows, and one for the light areas. You then blend the images using Photoshop. Perhaps someone can point us to an example where this has been done?
taivo (1843) 2004-03-01 2:28
This is a marvelous shot! The bridge is a gem and strange at the same time.
DiaAzul (1403) 2004-07-18 21:48
I do like this photograph - something about the symmetry and colours.
Several people have noted that cropping the sky from the top might improve the picture slighty. Another alternative would be a panaromic view to get more of the side webbing into the picture, increaing the effect of being swallowed into the bridge.
cyril (2748) 2004-08-12 9:37
Waouh, it's an amazing shot.
I like this bridge and the way you shot.
Tricky situation of exposure but you ended up greatly.
I like thoses arches which guide you to the end of the bridge.
odemira (514) 2004-08-12 9:43
Wonderfull photo, it looks like a passage to different world. Amazing prespective.
