Kwandwe is a private game reserve in the Eastern Cape. It has 54,400 acres of beautiful bush and quite isolated. One evening we came across this water hole where two cheetah were sitting and watching. Their activities were constantly being followed by a lady doing a research degree into animal behavior. They had not eaten for three days and were clearly hungry. Later she contacted our driver and told him that they had successfully captured an impala.
Cheetah are the fastest land animal and can reach speeds of 112-120 km/h. They mainly hunt gazelles, springbok and imapala ans sometimes young wildebeest or zebra. They hunt either in the early morning or late evening.
The three days we spent at Kwandwe were magical.

Quite a capture of these wild beasts looking in the same direction.
The catch light in their eyes testify of the sharpness and make them more lively.
As they are standing next to the pond, they might have preferred fish than zebra that night... :-p))

Hi Ann. It is an interesting experience, to consider the cheetahs up close. South Africa is an ideal country for all who love the animals and the land. The photo pleases me very well. Rgds, Wolfgang.

Hi Ann, I imagine that to spent there some time must be magical. So close are these wonderful animals. Was it safe? Wonderful view. Fantaastic composition.
My dream is to see wild animals at large in Africa but I am not brave enough.

You were very lucky, not only to encounter the Cheetahs, but also capure them on photo in this warm beautiful evening light!

Here's something you dont see everyday ! Here, or so I understand, over there either ? What a lovely combination of colours, all blending together. You have acheived a good result here, despite the necessary long lens ! For my money I would have considered the two cats as one, and moved their C/L to the third, it all looks to central to me ? It is as ever a personal thing !

It's great to see this beautiful wild animals.
Very beautiful this pair of leopards resting on the water, but do not lose sight of what is moving around.
Excellent colors and very good definition.

The cheetah has always been a favourite animal, they are the most endangered of the big cats. Beautiful picture, timely captured of how wildlife should be.. in their natural habitat. This is close enough in gorgeous light and what a great moment to share. Nice composition, they are perfectly in position, emphasising its nature and the posture in this is the main aspect I love, scanning the ares for possible prey. This is a great showing how well they look in the bush and blend in with the environment, the grass and water hole make a fine backdrop for comouflage. You have certainly captured that wonderfully lithe, expression, colors and muscular body to perfection. You made the most of a great opportunity capturing one of natures great delights. Excellent wildlife photography, a pleasure to view. Well done, Congrats

For me the 2 safaris that I did, once in Kenya and the other in Tanzania are among my best travel souvenirs and i'm just eager to be able to do it again
Just for instance for the sake of seeing again a few cheetahs drinking at a pond, exactly like in your present shot. What a thrill, what a treat !
have a nice evening

I am so pleased about this upload of yours as Kwandwe is close to where I live. Drove through there the other day and got some game shots but was on another mission. What a beautiful image with lots of atmosphere in the light coming in low. Cheetah are quite elusive to the photographer and this is very special.
By the way, the name Kwandwe comes from the Xhosa: Kwa (place of) Indwe (the Blue Crane), so it should really read Kwa'indwe or Kwa'ndwe. The Blue Crane is South Africa's national bird.
Thank you and best wishes.

these animals are superb and majstuous, and under this warm light, they are still more beautiful.I love how they are posing in front of the water, and how they are turning their head on the side,as if they have heard or seen something. You were surely very lucky to see them.

It seems that "my" bug has disappeared!
Nice nature picture, and I like particularly the light in their eyes, their "parallel" disposition.
It should reward your trek!

What amazing light you've captured. And also that unmistakable look of hunger on these cheetahs' faces. What a great shot and considering how fast these guys move at short notice, you've controlled the shutter speed to deliver a lovely sharp image.
Thanks for sharing and I wish you a lovely Sunday
zoomer (4225) 2011-05-22 7:56
Hi,I can imagine the thrill you must have felt beeing there. The light created by the low sun is very atmospheric and enhances the wild beauty of this scene. You show a steady hand, lucky you are not a hunter.Fine ideal composition.Friendly regards Wolf.

Hello Ann, Looking at these beautiful animals one could be forgiven for thinking that although they are big & powerful they may be harmless. They have a non trusting look on their face, as you described it may be a look of hunger. Well capture, both looking the same way & left enough frame for them to look into, good colour, light & detail.
