Photographer’s Note

The terms 'violent' and 'colourful' are synonymous with aspects of Southern Africa. In the summer we experience thunderstorms of tumultuous proportions.

The smell of ozone accompanied by the deafening crack of thunder and the writhing vines of achingly white lightning are instantly recognisable to anyone who has survived a highveld thunder storm.

On this particular day the approaching storm was illuminated by the setting sun. As the gust front rolled in from the west the valley became shrouded in a surreal orange glow offering this fleeting opportunity at capture through the antique provencal door. The effect dissolved quickly as the driven wind and hail smashed into the neighbourhood.
