There are only two shore based penguin colonies in S. Africa, one at Boulder's Beach.Simonstown and this one at Stoney Point, Betty's Bay. These are African (or Jackass) penguins whose numbers are declining rapidly. There are between 200 and 250 in this colony which about 12 years ago was decimated by a leopard. The leopard was seen and shot by a farmer a few days later which seems a bit harsh to me but I'm not living there. I was told that the penguins were originally called Jackass but due to some complaints they had to be renamed S.African ones; if anyone knows this story perhaps you could remind me.
My other photo is here.

Interesting pix and notes. I like the vertical format as it presents the colony well. A bit grainy maybe, maybe due to the cropping? Anyway well done.

I like the story about the leopard. Do you have any photos of the penguins at Boulders Beach? I like the mass of penguins on the rocks and the way they blend in - makes you wonder how they find each other!
