These are the grounds of the Elgin Community College positioned in the centre of the Elgin Valley near the town of Grabouw, 80km east of Cape Town.
This is a troubled part of the Western Cape because the only industry here is the apple industry. The apples grow a certain time of year and when they are ready for consumption there is work for the people in the valley. This also means that a big part of the year most people are unemployed and this causes a lot of stress and that leads to crime, alcoholism, abuse, etc. Also about 25% of the population is HIV infected. These numbers are a little worse than the average numbers nation wide. What can we do?
The Elgin Learning Foundation is an NGO and is trying to teach people to run their own business and make their own money. They also provide free medical care to sick people and help the youth with providing a library and swimming and music lessons. There are lots of other programs and all of these are aimed at bringing the standard of living throughout the valley to a higher level.
In the 2nd half of 2003 a group of Dutch students had the privilege to do an internship here at different departments. www.elf1.co.za
