Photographer's Note
Arum Lilies are endemic to South Africa and they can be found growing in boggy areas. We saw many flowering in the Tulbagh area. Here they border an orchard of fruit trees.
The Western Cape town of Tulbagh is situated on the northern end of the beautiful and fertile Tulbagh valley. The valley is almost completely surrounded by imposing mountain ranges, with the Obiqua Mountains to the west, the Winterhoek Mountains in the north and the Witzenberg Mountains to the east. The Great Winterhoek mountains tower 2077 metres above sea level and are picturesquely snowcapped in winter. The southern side of the valley is open to cooling south-east winds during the hot summer months.
Accordingly Tulbagh enjoys some of the most diverse and attractive conditions for viticulture in the Cape, and the differences in “terroir” (French wine term to describe the soil, placement and weather conditions) available to wine makers allow for a wide diversity of distinctive wines of excellence, attributes which have attracted many new producers to the valley.
A diverse flora is abundant all over the Tulbagh valley and in the mountains. Proteas grow wild, as do herbs such as Buchu. The spring brings a multitude of wild flowers to full bloom and coupled to the blossoms of the fruit trees, it makes for a glorious show of splendour. The productive valley produces some of the South Africa’ss best red, white and sparkling wines, olive oil, peaches, grain, pears and 70% of the country's plums!

This is beautiful !! Sharp, saturated and bright. The Lilies in the foreground have light falling on them. The clarity of the white flowers heightens the contrast with the deep bottle green.
Beyond this, we have the orchards, with reddish brown leaves and branches. On the ground is thick gras - yellow and green. The variety of shades and colours is immense. The hills in the background, looking through the branches and trees are so majestic !
The blue sky is another contrast and an effective addition to this colourful photograph.
Thanks for sharing.

Hello Rosemary,
An interesting and informative note and a photograph with incredible depth and interest and some wonderful lighting.
The choice of a wide angle lens and a small aperture has given you remarkable depth of field which allows the Arum lilies, illuminated in lovely bright low angle light, to dominate the foreground. The mid ground has some wonderful patterns of light and shade, presumably cast by an overhanging tree and the upper part of the picture demonstrates a fine contrast between reds and yellows and the lovely blue of the sky. The glimpses of distant mountains topped with clouds is an added bonus.
Gorgeous rich colours, lovely light, perfect exposure and stunning sharpness.
Beautiful!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hello Rosemary
So pleasing and gorgeous colors in this one. Lovely framing with the lilies in the foreground as anchor point, then the eye follows down the rows of vines.

Hi Rosemary,
beautiful composition with different vegetation types making separate layers here. I like the light which creates strong shades and adds a nice touch to the view.
Very well captured,
M
