Photographer's Note

One of the things I like to do when planning a road trip is to look for interesting locations which may offer photographic possibilities. Storms River was on our itinerary and besides the must-see Tsitsikamma Forest; I discovered a quirky restaurant-diner called Marilyn’s. A tribute to the American diner of the 50’s and 60’s. This neon lit location plays host to the annual ‘Elvis Festival’ and the décor and juke box music is a trip into the world of early ‘rock and roll’. Pictures of Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley line the walls, period cars and motorbikes are an integral part of the décor. An unlikely place in a sleepy village!

Not easy to photograph due to the patrons wandering round looking at the décor and dressing up in Marilyn and Elvis costumes and posing for their own pics, I like this shot. It looks better at full size where the details have greater impact. The pink glow on the chrome is a reflected neon sign and I admit to tweaking the saturation to bring out this feature. I also added a little tonal contrast which, I think, adds a graphic punch to the shot.

The Chevrolet Belle Air 1958 was a beautiful motor, so sculptural in form. Apparently Dinah Shore and Pat Boone promoted sales of "longer…..lower…..lovelier by far". If she was a lady you would see a perfect body: a cheeky backside, sexy hips thinning at the middle tapering to two nice headlights and beautiful frontal features. Furthermore she is as elegant as a year old filly, and as swift as an Impala. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAXUsPKMsEc

This car won the overall Concours d’Elegance at the Garden Route’s Milligan Rally 2008.
