Photographer's Note

"Imagine if, for 16 days, there was no rape, no child abuse."

As part of the 16 days of activism, 3600 pairs of women's nickers have been hung above the streets of Maboneng - representing the 3600 women who are raped every day in South Africa.

Getting a little political - on to the Trekearth stuff: this photograph would have been impossible even as recently as 5 years ago. Inner city Johannesburg used to be a complete no-go area and one of the world's biggest crime hot-spots. With a drop in crime throughout the city, an increase in security and an urban regeneration campaign centred around the Maboneng area it is starting to become a highly viable tourist destination - with a backpackers, a couple of boutique hotels and some very nice restaurants. It is still quite an edgy version of tourism, but now very worthwhile if looking for a very different urban experience: Cape Town and the Garden Route it is not.
