Photographer's Note

South Africans have a love affair with their game reserves, and I am fascinated to hear them talking about their intimate relationships with that nature that makes their country so remarkable.

Most of these folks grew up visiting animal reserves from their early childhood, and they keep going there on a regular basis, with the same level of enthusiasm a first time tourist would have.

But to my surprise, many of these nature enthusiasts never came across a leopard, despite having been there 30 or 40 times through their life, as this magnificent animal seems to be quite shy during the day.

So we felt quite lucky the last time we visited Kruger for a week, as we saw two different ones on the same day, one in the morning, one in the evening.

I think that the trick is to take the smallest, less travelled dirt roads, that very little visitors bother to use, as these animals prefer to stay away from any human presence.
